Here's basic info off Domov:
"The conditions governing the issue of a permanent residence permit is to a foreigner vary depending on the circumstances under which the foreigner applies for permanent residence, and depending on the duration of the foreigner’s legal stay in the Czech Republic.
The law clearly defines the cases entitling the foreigner to apply for permanent residence permit without having previously stayed in the Czech Republic. These are cases of foreigners applying for permanent residence in order to live together with a close relative – a Czech citizen (husband or wife, a minor or an unprovided child of majority, a single parent older than 70 years of age, arrogated child). A foreigner may further apply for permanent residence without having previously stayed in the Czech Republic on humanitarian grounds or on other grounds worthy of special consideration (e.g. a husband/wife or a child of an individual having been granted asylum in the Czech Republic). In compliance with the above, permanent residence permit may be requested by a minor (under 18 years of age) or an unprovided child of maturity (e.g. a student) in order to live together with his/her parent – a foreigner staying in the Czech Republic under a permanent residence permit. Foreigners may further apply for a permanent residence permit without having previously stayed in the Czech Republic, if their residence is in the interest of Czech Republic’s foreign policy, which must be proved by an official document.
Having stayed in the Czech Republic for eight uninterrupted years on a long-term visa, a foreigner may apply for a permanent residence permit if the application is motivated by the foreigner’s intention to live with a foreigner who has already been granted permanent residence permit, provided that the applicant is a husband or wife or such a foreigner, a child dependent of such a foreigner or a single parent older than 70 years.
Any foreigner having stayed in the Czech Republic for ten uninterrupted years on a long-term visa may apply for a permanent residence permit."

Thanks Jeff - I have heard about these regulations - pretty tough, aren't they? I had actually heard 2 years as the new limit but then probably every man and his dog will be applying if that is the case - 5 yrs sounds more realistic. As you noted, you find it difficult to believe - believe me, I am skeptical too... |

Jeevan,
If you are married to a Czech woman and want a Czech passport/citizenship, then you must renounce your citizenship from your country. Since you probably won't want to do that, settle for the next best thing--a 10-year residence permit. Go to the foreign police in the city where your wife is listed as having her permanent address here in the CZ, fill in an application for the permit(also use her address in CZ as YOUR permanent CZ address) along with 2 passport photos and(if I recall properly) a 50 Kc "stamp" that you buy at the post office. You will also have to provide a marriage certificate(if you were not married in the Czech Republic, you will need the foreign marriage cert translated & certified as well as super-notarized by the Min. of Foreign Affairs) and a birth certificate(also translated, certified and super-notarized) Within a month, contact the foreign police again(this gives them time to review your application) & set up an appointment for an interview(my interview was"is all the info on this application correct?") and...WHIZBANG! you get the most GOD AWFUL puke-green colored 10-yr. residence permit! Also, if you will want your children to have both Czech nationality as well as nationality from the country of YOUR origin, I recommend that she gives birth to them HERE in C.R....otherwise, they will tell you that in order to give your children Czech citizenship, they will have to renounce whatever other citizenship they might possess...where as if you are, let's say, an American citizen, the US will grant the child citizenship, even if born in CZ, as long as 1 of the parents is a US citizen. Be patient! and good luck! |

Hi Tim,
Read your advice, but what if the person wants to renounce his citizenship from his country. What are the conditions then? I have the puke-green residency permit but I'd like to get the citizenship as that'll enable me to travel in EU without any hassles. |

Junin,
I'm afraid I can't answer your question because I never looked into the matter; I have dual citizenship(EU & US). Perhaps someone else could assist you with the procedure for renouncing your citizenship/gaining Czech citizenship. I DO have some advice for you though, whether you want to hear it or not, and that is:
Don't make a big mistake & renounce your citizenship. Hold onto it. It is valuable, no matter if it's US, UK, S.African, Australian....HOLD ONTO IT! Certainly the "hassles" of travelling in the EU(with a valid CZ residence permit, I might add) cannot substantiate the need to renounce ANY country's citizenship. Cherish it! and good luck ;o) |

I am an American living in Italy. I am a member of the U.S. Navy, but will be getting out of my contract soon. I wish to move to Prague. Do I need to have a job offer in hand to obtain work permit/ visa from Czech Republic? |

Rsekula, your new employer would have to obtain the work permit for you. They have to get it from the labor office nearest them. When you receive a serious job offer, you should definitely ask them about the possibility of their getting a work permit for you. |
