Hi Ss - Sounds like you'd like Prague 2 - Vinohrady .. it's in the center, but has nice tree-lined streets, shops, etc. You can walk downtown easily.
Here's one on our neightborhood reports: (with photos)

I used to live in Prague 1 - and hated the tourists at the weekends and during summer - and also the fact that most restaurants are aimed at tourists.
I now live in Vinohrady (just behind the national museum) and - as Jeff points out - it is a superb neihbourhood - with all the things you mention as requirements.
To answer your other question: I would say that in terms of expats - Vinohrady has the highest concentration. |

As an expat, and a resident of Vinohrady, I concur with both Anthony and Jeff. If you can afford it, this is certainly the best (my opinion) neighborhood in Praha to live in. Shops, restaurants, a few good bars, gyms, parks, expats, etc. VH is easy and close to central downtown. Also, it's a cheap cab ride home (150Kc) from bar/clubs in the center late-night. 40,000Kc will get you a big apartment here, newly reconstructed. |

you sound like a perfect Vinohrady match. Or possibly Hradcany, up behind the castle if you want more backyard and green space. Worse commuter traffic on the trams though. |

I'm afraid I'll have to insist on payment in advance for my advice. Nothing personal, just a sliding scale. You'll be subsidizing all the free advice I've ever given. Thanx. |

Vrsovice is also an option, basically Vinohrady but without the high price, if you can afford stay in Vinohrady, if you are watching your pennies, try upper V (top part of Vrsovice) streets like Finska, Zitomirska, Slovinska, etc all very nice, safe and quick easy access to namesti Miru, there are also some great little restaurants around there which are not so well known but have tasty food at very reasonable prices, case in point Mon Ami 2 - http://prague.tv/prague/dining/restaurants-balkan/5173 |

Not to be the spoil sport but I find Vinohrady kind of boring and lacking character. Vrsovice, or even the part of Karlin near the center have a certain charm that has recently peaked my interest (both of which have some fantastic newly renovated flats as well). Currently I live in Prague 1, and I must say, it is very nice for public transport. Basically you can get home from anywhere in Prague in about a half hour. The tourists are annoying, but i've got used to them over the years. Must move out of P1 however. Must move. You'd probably like vinohrady, but keep your options open, there are nice apartments popping up all over prague.
As a sidenote. If there was ever a war between Zizkov and Vinohrady, Zizkov would wipe the floor with ya'll wine drinkers:) Trying to claim Riegrovy Sady as vinohrady. Humph. |

I recommend Prague 5 Smichov. There is an excellent gym in the Andel Shopping Center and there are 2 Huge western style cinemas that play movies in English. The Andel area is also good for getting around the city because it has the majority of the tram lines and the Andel Metro stop. It is quiet and safe and there are few if any tourists. |

Hello SS,
I think Prague is good in general, but I do prefer Prague 2 cause of lots of bars, restaurants and places for chil-out and friendly to foreigners.
I can personally recommend club RAdost FX and I am used to visit bar-lounge HUSH now. Its in Lublanska street, Prague 2 ;-)
Sooooo, Prague 2 is winning ... |

Hi, I a moving to Prague next year, with my native boyfriend, after 4 visits. We are moving to Bohnice, if his communist guarenteed flat approval goes through, but I would be glad to know about other areas with a high concentration of ex-pats and ex-pat friendliness. I can't wait, so any other ex-pat adive would be appreciated x ;) |

What the hell is a "communist guarenteed flat approval" mean in 2008? |

hahahah, I was wondering the same thing about the "communist guaranteed.." ????? in 2008?
I suggest Vinohrady, Vrsovice, and the Namesti Miru area. I wouldn't focus on trying to live surrounded by ex-pats though. Most everyone speaks English and you'll get so much more out of the experience if you meet locals. |

Hi, I have read all your good proposals on which location to take residence. Maybe one of you can tell us where we can get to meet some nice people aged 35-50, who are interested in being local friends and guides in Prague at least in the first period. We expect to move to Pragues in May/June 2010, and want to be fully prepared. I hope somebody can give us some advice...... |

Hello to current and future Prague expats,
It seems that this conversation is a bit outdated, and we are fortunate to have the many neighborhood descriptions of Prague TV. Just in case--for the reference of others, here are some articles on our blog related to this topic.
