Hi peoples. Anyone have buying / shipping from Amazon experience? I have these Amazon gift certificates would like to use and am wondering about a couple things.

1. Is it better to buy off the UK site (http://www.amazon.co.uk/) for cheaper shipping reasons?

2. I assume i will have to pay a duty for new electronics - is that correct?

Ok, thanks for any answers/tips..

J

I've bought many things from Amazon over the years, Jeff. I've almost never had a problem.

If you are ordering in the EU, you shouldn't be charged customs, but you will pay the VAT from the country you ordered from. You should also consider shipping times. Ordering from the German site is better for electronics as you'll find the electrical components are better matched to the types of plugs here, as opposed to the UK products.

As for US v UK, the thing to do is check the prices in both shops, and for that matter, even check the German site. Even if you don't speak the language, you can do a search for the product name or model and check the price. The annoying thing about Amazon in Europe is that you'll find something on the UK site that's cheaper on the german site (or vice versa) and find that it ships from the other warehouse anyway (at the price you ordered).

The other odd thing about customs, is that I found that if you include a book or two in the order from Amazon US, they don't charge duty coming in. Now that may have changed since the last time, but that's been my experience.

Thanks alot Paul.. Just what i was after.

Especially this tip:

It's a bit of a weird situation as i am using some gift certificates - we'll see if i can use them on the .de site. (i know exactly what i want - so i SHOULD be able to navgiate the german site..)

Thanks again..

Google translate helps too, I had to turn to it when buying something from amazon.fr once.
