Greetings all you roundabouts - have a question for you:
What goods are produced here (handmade or otherwise) that are considered of the highest quality? What things are made especially in this region? (This could extend possibly past the borders of this particular country.)

What are the special things? Crystal comes first to mind. I am trying to find the more obscure answers ...

For ex: Jawa motorcycles, or handmade puppets, etc...

Plastic beads made in a small North Bohemian village are, evidently, a big hit in Africa...

Jawa stopped producing bikes years ago. However, I hear they are going to produce a water-cooled export model, but with an Austrian built engine.

A list of tradition export sectors is available:

Uhmm... Becher? And, oh yeah! - Beer - and lots of it. Czech hops are supposed to be of the finest variety. (The wine is nothing special. Too much dixoin in the grapes or something.) Now i HAVE had some fantastic slivovice (plum moonshine) in Moravia and Boruvkovice (Blueberry) farther East. Although i would credit the Yugo-lands as having the best homemade booze (Rakija).

And hmm... do words count? Some nice CZ writers ...

Plastic explosives? Semtex made in the CR. Actually quite known for other small arms production - not one of her (the republika's) nicer sides...

There is a comapny that presses vinyl somewhere here outta town. Seems that many major labels and indie producers use them as known as some of the best in the world (done for a good price).
I'll think of more -

There's a company called KR Audio Electronics that makes top-end amplifiers in Prague. They seem to be pretty big with hi-fi buffs.

The Czechs refurbish the Russian T80s and T90s (tanks) and they designed the Russian Air Force trainer (the L39 Albatross).

What do you mean do they make high quality goods. Get a grip.
ESA - [anon] Sun Mar 12th 23:44 2006 / #18
Hey dude, which grip are you talking about? The question was about high quality goods produced in the czech republic, not about refurbishing and designing done there.

Those Jawa bikes may be assembled here. No way are those engines, for instance, made here ...

this is an oddball one. But soda dispensers. I worked in two different bars in the US, One in Chicago, and one in san francisco. Both of the dispensers I had were exactly the same, and both had "made in Czech republic" stamped on the bottom of them. They were large bottles with wire mesh around them, and a silver head. To be honest we also used them to huff Nitrous Oxide which was in plentiful supply from the wholesaler we bought our alcohol from. Oh well:) What do you expect when you send kids to the wholesaler and they actually sell poppers over the counter to make whipped cream:)

to anon #19. Just a side note. If Ford is made in Korea, and assembled in Mexico, then why is it "american made"?? I think these things have more to do with their origin rather than where they are actually "assembled" these days. (insert southern accent here) "world just don't operate like it used to...."
Ever heard of? - [anon] Tue Mar 14th 11:14 2006 / #23
Ever heard about the Russian space programme? You know, MIR space stations etc

All those guys got their first flight training in a CZECH MADE jet, the L39 Albatross.

http://www.warbirdalley.com/l39.htm

What do you frikkin mean, "quality czech goods"?

The engines are made here to ya git.

I dont think the US Astronauts get their training in a British made jet.

The Aero Vodochody organization of Czechoslovakia had been involved with the license production of Soviet jet designs in the early 1950s. In the later part of the decade, the organization initiated the design for a tandem-seat jet trainer, which emerged as the "L-29 Delfin".

The Delfin was designed by a team under Z. Rublic and K. Thomas, and the "XL-29" prototype performed its maiden flight on 5 April 1959, powered by a British Bristol Viper turbojet. The project had of course been implemented with Soviet blessing and knowledge, and in 1960 the Soviets announced a competitive fly-off between the Delfin, the Polish PZL-Mielec "TS-11 Iskra", and the Yakovlev Yak-32, with the winner to become the standard trainer for the USSR and its allies.

The Albatros is a low-wing aircraft with tandem seating, and is powered by a Soviet-built Progress AI-25TL turbofan with 1,720 kilograms (3,790 pounds) thrust. This engine was originally designed for the Yak-40 airliner and modified by the Czech Motorlet organization for the L-39. The engine air intakes are set high behind the cockpit, reducing the chance of foreign-object ingestion and keeping them out of airflow disruptions from the wings. The Albatros also has a French-made auxiliary power unit (APU) for self-starting.

And what about radars like VERA or TAMARA. These are the only radars able to detect american "invisible spy" planes!! China wanted to buy those from Czech republic but USA stopped it. They want it.

Jawa has a long history of not making their own engines.

There first motorcycle, in 1929, used a German Wanderer engine.

Chief Design Genius, George Patchett, intorduced them to Villiers engines.

Post war JAWA motorcycles used engines made by CZ.

JAWA and CZ helped several motorcycle companies, in other non-communist countries, such as Italy, Turkey and Indian.

Everybody knows about Ideal Jawa (unfortunately now defunct) in India.

Italjet, in Italy, started out in the 1960's using JAWA Type 360 engines.

Aprillia, now a big name in motorcycles, started out making licenced assembled CZs and Zundapp mopeds in 1969. I own a 1974 Aprillia built CZ 350, which is good for 170 Kmh. due to certain Italian engine components. It is the only Italian built motorcycle, of the 1970's, that had light which would work at night in the rain.

Jawa still make the old trusty and reliable 2 strokes for non-EU countries, also spares including new engines. The new 4 stroke Jawa motorcycles use a Chinese made engine of original design (it isn't a copy of Honda's notoriously gutless CB250N "Wet Dream" lump).

The engine is the only non-Czech part of the bike.

It looks good, Jawa have filled the hole in the UK market for a 250cc 4 stroke all rounder and commuter bike, normally filled by deceasing numbers of aging early 1980's clapped out Japanese fare.

The Chinese, making only poor quality copies of Honda CG 125 pushrod engine powered "learner" bikes.

For the experienced and full licence biker there has been only old reliable Jawa 2 strokes, slightly inferiour MZ 2 strokes or old unreliable Japanese 4 strokes available in the 250cc - 350cc commuter market.

I'll certainly keep on buying JAWA motorcycles, Mitas Tyres, etc. as long as they're sold in the UK.

Mitas Tyres are also proving very popular and are a well recognised brand, next to Dunlop, Firestone, Pirelli, Avon, etc. in both car and motorcycle garages.

The quality of Czech design and engineering is still recognised here in Britain.
