Hi,

I'm living in Prague quite long time, about 8 months. Unfortunately unable to find any motorbikes-meeting-place here. Does something like that exist here ?

I've taken my bike here, and lonely riding starting to frustrate me. I'm looking for people enjoys riding on bikes, both touring and racing on track. Got SV 1000S so it manages in both areas well.Of course riding ladies kindly welcome also :).

Thanks for help, Sławek

Let's hope not. People who ride motorbikes must be some of the most selfish people in the world: every minute they travel they create noise pollution which disturbs the lives of dozens or even hundreds of people. One motorbike riding through the centre of Prague at night could wake up several thousand people.

I am sure that it is possible to make motorbikes quiet, but the people who use them seem to have the kind of egos which need them to be the centre of attention. They certainly have no consideration for the lives of other people.

They are also dangerous, but fortunately for the rider rather than to other road users.

Alex,
Congratulations, you have almost most simple and "flat" opinion about motorbikes I've ever heard :). Maybe try to be more tolerant, huh?

I wouldn't be so sure that motorbike is creating more pollution that i.e. cars. Pollution is directly connected with fuel usage, and usually bikes needs less of it that cars. Second thing is that bikes are not creating traffic jams, and which is connected with that are not standing still, using fuel unnecessary.

About noise. I personally am using factory exhaust, which is very silent, but it is connected with risk I'm taking during ride. Why risk? Because our friends in cars, buses or trucks, even walking people sometimes miss me and it can create danger situations. That is the reason I understand people with loud pipes - it is really saver in the city with them. Even if someone cannot see them, will hear so riders are safer then. And as you know motor bikers doesn't have any safety systems so it can be life or death matter. Maybe take it for your consideration?

Almost all bikers I know rides, because they love it. It is so different than experiences i.e. in cars, that they agree with danger it is connected with bikes. Will not try to explain you that, will not understand anyway.

"They are also dangerous, but fortunately for the rider rather than to other road users."
Will leave this sentence without comment.

At least you are one of the quiet ones. Perhaps you could use your influence to make the others more considerate.
slaawek - [profile] Sun Aug 13th 12:43 2006 / #5
Nope. I understand their point of view and personally don't mind.

Back to topic. No bikers here?

Sand in petrol tanks? Smashing parked bikes?

And motorbike riders are supposed to be obnoxious.

In a perfect world, I can read Alex Johnstone's obituary already.

alex, you seem to have some pretty heavy issues.
were you molested on a motorbike by a leather-bound-priest or something? well, anyway, i wish you luck the day a knife/gun weilding harley guy sees you tip over his bike, i know i'd cut ya'

meanwhile, cut Sławek some slack, its not his mother tongue

You make the mistake which most people make, namely that motorbike riders are strong people. They are not, they are very insecure: this is the reason why feel the need to ride machines which disturb the whole neighbourhood. These people have fragile egos and need to be constantly reassured that they are the centre of attention. Very often they were ignored as children and only got attention by screaming and crying.

I doubt that they are physically strong, either - they get very little exercise, and most of them are fat and flabby (this is why the engines have to be so big). Moreover, since motorbikes are deeply unfashionable nowerdays, you will find that quite a high proportion of motorbike riders are over forty.

Alex,
thanks for psychoanalysis and sharing with your opinion about me and other riders. However, this is out of topic so PLEASE leave this conversation and write your posts somewhere else.
Alex Johnstone - [profile] Sun Aug 13th 23:59 2006 / #11
It may be "out of topic" to you, because your only interest is to find a friend who shares your "hobby" so that you don't have to ride around by yourself like a sad loser. It seems from your original post that you are also under the illusion that some woman might find this appealing.

However, to the rest of humanity the noise which these wretched machines produce is of more concern, since this is what affects *their* lives.

Alex, you are indeed an idiot, MOTORCYCLING is a SPORT, fighting the wind, leaning, etc. - it is proven you burn calories doing it.

of course, if you think bikers are so weak and flabby, go to a motoraj party sometime and share your opinions... good luck chewing without teeth, chowderhead.

as for motorbikes being out of fashion/over 40, the comment is beyond stupid, am in paris right now, and i see about 20 motorbikes parked per block, and almost everyone riding is below 40, and it is summer, so most french folk are out of town. meanwhile, back in CZ people on motorbikes avoid driving in prague, due to tram tracks, cobblestones, insane drivers, theives, etc. that doesn't mean there aren't a ton of prague motorbikers in the countryside...

you really have some issues, jerky...

Thanks PTV Robot..

Now back to the topic at hand. Feel free to start a new topic Alex to express your views on motorbiking in general. Paulo is looking for bike clubs. Hi Paulo!
Ho Hum - [profile] Tue Aug 15th 12:00 2006 / #18
Alex is spot on. And by the way where is the good CKS? I thought that she was a motobike chick and would have something to say about this.

However I wouldnt put sand in petrol tanks, push bikes over or do anything like that - its trespass to property and could result in criminal prosecution. So dont do it, unless its your bike.

While motorbikes are more fuel efficient than cars they are totally unnecessary here. Ever heard of a tram, metro or bus?

For people with the same interests as you Slaawa, try doing a google search.

Just dont ride your smelly noisy bike down our city streets.

Have a nice day!
pragueboy pragueboy - [profile] Tue Aug 15th 12:50 2006 / #19
I really can't believe this topic... if you are so worried about noise pollution, don't live in a city. surely you have better things to do than debate the validity of motorcycles as transport/hobby/sport. This is a new low for this board...
Alex Johnstone - [profile] Tue Aug 15th 13:51 2006 / #20
I think it is reasonable to discuss factors which affect the quality of life in cities. I am sorry that you don't care about this.

It wouldn't make sense to put a toxic waste dump in the middle of the city, and nor is it reasonable for people to ride motorobikes without silencers which disturb thousands of people with their racket. As well as being unreasonable it is illegal to do so, so the Czech government appears to agree with me on this one.

To Jeff: if you are going to dump postings which attack other people please dump the ones which attack me, not just the ones which defend noisy motorbikes.

I am sorry that this isn't quite what the guy was looking for: however, like many posts on Prague.tv, it has developed into something more interesting. If someone posted to ask where he could meet small children I am sure that you would get responses which were slightly off-topic. What this guy does is highly relevant to the lives of the people who live in Prague.

I suspect that most people who live in cities curse noisy motorbikes. In fact, even the American Motorcyclist Association does so. It recognises that noisy motorbikes degrade the lives of many people and that this reflects on motorbike riders as a whole:

http://www.ama-cycle.org/legisltn/positions/noise.asp
Alex Johnstone - [profile] Tue Aug 15th 14:27 2006 / #22
In addition, the US Motorcycle Riders' Association believes that the problem of excessive noise "creates a major threat to motorcycling":

"Loud exhaust pipes, usually from replacement aftermarket exhaust systems, but occasionally from modified or defective original-equipment systems, have long been one of the most significant public-relations problems that motorcycling faces. Few have reason to realize this more than the organizations that defend motorcyclists' rights."

It goes on:

"These groups frequently encounter the stigma that irresponsible or unthinking riders create with excess exhaust noise when the organizations are addressing other matters. Legislators and regulators often have a bias against motorcycles and motorcyclists because of the stream of complaints about motorcycle noise from their constituents. The groups seeking to maintain motorcycling freedoms must devote extra energy and expend more of their limited resources to overcome this bias. They also see major motorcycle events turned away from preferred locations, parks and other facilities closed to motorcyclists, and potential benefits (such as lowered tolls, designated parking, etc.) denied because of the concern about noise. The AMA even created the 'Loud pipes risk rights' to highlight and define the problem."

Note that slaawek's argument that noisy pipes protect riders is false:

"The dissenters, reportedly members of some smaller rights groups, offered the "loud pipes save lives" argument, although safety researchers at the Summit reportedly produced research that shows that is not true, and that just the opposite appears to be the case -- that bikes with modified exhaust systems crash more frequently."

Hey there "alex johnstone." Dumping feels great, eh?

I would prefer it if they kept all the comments in, so that people could follow the discussion.

Hello Prague TV Powers that be. Hey Jeff, TT.

I finally agree with Alex Johnstone. If he wants to attack me via the message board, I clearly invite him. This is a democracy. Free speach and all that. In fact, I offer him my address so he can do it himself.

Of course, in the spirit of fair exchange, he could give me his address as well so we could, quietly, finish this debate up and down his street.

And thanks Slaawek for starting this blog. All the links and quotations Alex has graciously shared with all of us, carefully researched in what little spare time he must have, have all been quite educational and informative.

Like many of us here, I have really seen the light. Thanks Alex.

I'm going to look at bikes this Friday.

Please, keep up the good work.
