I have a Hybrid TV tunner - both for analogue and digital channels, so I can watch : CT1, Nova, Prima, Public TV, Z1, Ocko and some others...
Is there ANY show or any kind of program with czech subtitles instead of dubbing ?? I'd watch anything...

unfortunately not :( On occassion they have shows which are in duo (i.e. you can switch between mono and stereo and it will change languages instead between original language and czech)
Other than that, there are sometimes shows on CT2 in English (English sit coms) and also movies in original languages.
Basically, you are best off getting a skybox if you can. If not, well I suggest renting dvds or learning Czech :) |

another option is 3click.tv based in Prague, delivering on-demand broadband TV streaming complete series of most shows on television today. Ad free and complete series of every show. An in browser player similar to YouTube works on PC Mac and iPhone 3g (haven't tried iPhone yet)
Cheaper than a skybox- quite impressive
site http://3click.tv
showlist: http://3click.tv/showlist.php
but don't let it persuade you into not learning Czech ;) |

UPC digital cable has a number of channels that transmit in multi languages. I have the HD version and there are about 20 channels with English audio. However, this usually doesn't include the 4 basic cz channels.
3.click is semi interesting, but the quality isn't that grea. It definitely is not viewable on a tv. And, it's a subscription based service. If you are going to pay for something, it might as well be cable or Sky.
On the other hand, there is "Apple TV", where you can pay for individual shows which you download in 720p hd. Shows are about $1.99 each or cheaper if you buy the season. Depending on how much tv you really want to watch, it is probably a reasonable option. |

thanks for the advices guys, btw I just discovered that on the publicly available digital channel CT2, they have a movie with subtitles every now and then (and original audio) ...
upc seems like a poor choice, from what I saw on their web site, not really good content
sky - just read the latest comments about them + their web site is down for weeks now, only a mobile number to call .. yuck
dvd rentals - the one close to my flat closed
and iTunes rentals just doesn't work if you have czech credit card

1. Sky.cz is a major ripoff. Try this site... http://storesatellite.com/
They ship here and they are about half the price of the place in Brno. They set you up with a direct account with Sky, so you don't have to worry about whether they paid or not.
UPC is ok, but only 5 HD channels (HBO, Eurosport, Voom, NatGeo, FilmboxHD) The package price to get everything is far higher than what you'd pay Sky to get 25 or so HD channels. But, there are many channels in English on UPC DIGITAL (NOT analogue). There's about 15 channels that are always in multi language all the time and another 10 or so that have English tracks part-time. But this refers to the Cable package and NOT UPC Direct satellite.
I have both services, and would suggest Sky, however, if you are also looking for broadband internet service, UPC can give you a package price. If you just want TV, go with Sky. |
