Hey folks.

I seem to get really slow speeds after having switched to o2 internet extreme 2mb connection (the one without fair use policy bollocks). before i was on the internet express package, and the downloads were flying in (300kbps+), until i reached my montly allowance.

wondering if o2 throttle bittorrent data. they're not on this list (below). ive spent the whole afternoon tweeking about with ports and stuff, but no change.

has anyone else had troubles with bittorrent and their czech isp? anyone found one that works well?

I have, its just really really slow, also there are some data limit issues so that slows everything way down.

i suspect they use some heavy traffic shaping too, becuse encryption has little effect.

It depends, a lot, on what torrent you are downloading and when you do it. I have UPC. If I download a popular tv show (US) when the torrent is new and there are about 200 seeders and fewer leechers, I get up to 600kbps. A day later, if there are 5000 seeders and 12000 leechers, I'm lucky to get 45kbps.

If you are using Azureus, check out their IRC help channel. If you open the settings up, one of the tech support types can actually help you to tweek the system remotely.

And, consider UPC if it's in your area. The service is faster and better crown for crown.

I can only confirm it with the express package too.

If you tune carefully your torrent client to insane small trafic (<10kB I guess), other traffic works quite fine.

UPC sounds good but I'm afraid it's only over cable TV.

I'm having trouble with my o2 connection as well... I have the 6144 Extreme package and I'm only getting about half speed (when I'm lucky!) I didn't have that problem with Volny (35GB limit with no slow down after that but 199kc extra for every 3GB and the highest speed connection) but then I moved to a place that they don't service.

I have been getting these slow speeds with o2 on everything I do, not just with torrent downloads (I use Utorrent, btw) but also with basic usage. Also, speedtest.net and dsl.cz both show (at best) half of the speed that I'm paying for, and it doesn't matter what time of day or night...

Some of this might be obvious, but.. first of all change the default port (usually 6881) to something like 54001. Make sure it's mapped through your firewall and router (port forwarding).

you can check if you've correctly opened your port here: http://www.myserver.org/CustomPortSniff.asp?

and maybe it's just the torrent(s) so try this one, it should be pretty fast: http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.04/ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso .torrent

well i've heard isp block commong p2p ports so i'm using the xbox port 3074, which they're unlikely to block.

it's going at an ok speed now, tickin over at 30.
