So... i have been trying out TMOB' new 4g internet the last 2 weeks. I am connecting at the moment at 290.8 kilobits per second as tested by

http://www.bandwidthplace.com

They rate this as Mediocre. So do i. But maybe i have been spoiled by 4mb lines so i feel like i am waiting at every turn. However, it is completely useable and world's above the connection that Eurtel offers. I tested theirs around 6months ago and returned the modem after 2 weeks. Painfully slow and inconsistent. I would get bumped off a few times an hour and have to reconnect. With the 4g I maybe get bumped once all day.

The customer support was horrible though. I received completely contradicting and erroneous info. One tech support guy basically said to me that i should just wait a month because they were stil fixing problems. Now, this was all done as an individual. Once i played the corporate account card, everything improved. Our contact was extremely helpful and his intervention and recommendations saved the day. But overall the assistance was far from wonderful. And i wonder what would have happened had i not had someone's mobile to call...

Overall i recommend giving it a shot if this is your only chance for higher (not high) speed internet. Go with ADSL or preferrably Cable if available in your flat/house. I would recommend not giving up though if you need tech support. Keep calling every day until you get the results you want.

(Oh - and read the contract. In beautiful big corporate style, it says there that they do not guarantee any speeds etc - so there is a potential for frustration if there is not a good signal in your area.

Hey Jeff, I'm currently using ET's CDMA hovno and haven't been terribly thrilled with the speed. But. I just tested my connection using the URL you posted and came up with 288 kilobits per second. I've gotta say their customer service has been pretty damn solid, though I did have some problems with being booted off in the spring; I wrote an email and rcvd credit for 4 months service.

I'm now paying 699kc a month + VAT. What does Tmobile run??
jeff jeff Fri Dec 23rd 07:52 2005 / #2
Not sure: I'll check on the final price. I think i'm paying 1000 because opted for the 10g data limit as the lower package (also at 699 i think) has a data limit of 2g's i believe.

So... yeah, it's not superfast, and for the same money could get a much faster cable connection... BUT, it's ok. Someone was using my computer last night, a non-computer person, and she commented how fast it was. I guess am spoiled by the connection at the lab. The problem with speed is that once you break that threshold it's hard to be satisfied with anything less.. :]

Just tested again this am at 353.3 kilobits per second.
jeff jeff Fri Dec 23rd 10:25 2005 / #4
And mine at the moment: 506.3 kilobits per second

I think this reflects something that i've been told: The connection speeds are very inconsistent. For one thing, you are sharing a finite amount of bandwidth with the many others who are connected in your area. More people / Less speed. Makes a case for working/surfing during non-standard hours..

I tried T-Mobile's 4G for 1 month (November). Tech support is terrible. Speeds were fine 1000Kb+ during non-peak, but 100-200Kb max during the day. Found out it was not a problem with the 4G connection, but with their limited internet connection. So, if you just want to use it in the middle of the night or just directly to T-Mobile, go ahead and use it.
I didn't test it in too many places - just a few spots around Prague. Maybe I was lucky , but I always had a good signal.

BTW - It is not possible to get a Public IP address - even though they may tell you it is possible. This is finally why I canceled the service. It is strange because they offer Public IPs for GPRS connections, but they can't manage to make it work with 4G. It was also funny that it took me 3 days to convince them I needed the public IP via 4G. They kept telling me to just use GPRS/Edge. Finally I had to tell them 'Why the fuck would I pay 1200Kc a month for 4G and then just use GPRS???'

Also - It took three weeks to finally get back my 10,000Kc foreigner deposit. Which may not seem too long, but it was three weeks of phone calls, visits to T-Mobile shops and two visits to their main office in Roztyly.

Yeah, i also need an IP.. Frustrating.. Said it was possible.. IT really seems like the tech staff is not so informed.. As if they just launched it and no one knows exactly what is going on...

Hey I am getting circa 500 Kbps with Eurotel's CDMA offering - I have a colleague who tried T- Mobile's offering and was not thrilled with the less than 200 Kbps he was clocking....

Speeds on shared resource networks are often indicators of the technologies ( the "up to" or "maximum speeds" of operators are clocked in optimum conditions and never guaranteed by any operator) how many people are using the network at the same time and the total capacity of the network -

Both Eurotel and T- Mobile claim maximum speeds of the technologies they are using ( Eurotel CDMA EV-DO, a 3d generation wireless technology, and T-Mobile TDD-UMTS - a derivitive 3G technology ( not 4G as they claim which in other countries would likely result in a lawsuit against them for lack of truth in advertising) , at theoretically about 1 Mbps. I have in late hours got up to speeds around 800 Kbps, but I must be close to the station antenna...

Static IP addresses are something usually not obtainable on a wireless broadband connection or shared aDSL service - but you can get one with aDSL - just needed to get dedicated badwith at a higher price.

I don't really need a static IP, but it seems like

they're randomly switching my NATed IP address

mid-connection, making the service unusable if

you need a long-standing connection. Has anyone

else had this problem and do they know if there's

a solution?

Thanks,

-- Sam

Interesting.. Yes, i have noticed the switching. Do they offer static IPs?
sm - [profile] Mon Oct 9th 00:39 2006 / #10
Apparently not. But I seem to be able to keep a connection
alive long-term on port 80 and port 25. So they must be
doing something special for port 22, and perhaps others.
I've played around with this, trying smaller MTUs bit still
hit the same problem. I managed to get Linux to connect
to their service but still hit the same problem with ssh as with
Putty. It's more than a major pain, it makes this thing useless
for anything but web-browsing. Anyone from T-Mobile
reading? I'm using this for evaluation and am about to
ditch it.

Went to the T-Mobile office today and they said
that a static IP addr is possible. I've signed up for
it; let's see how it goes.

And yet another genius restarts a 2-3 year old thread just to put garbage advertising on the board!

If you're looking for cheap ADSL, check this offer from a company called Voinet [All ADSL are actually via O2 I learned]. The price is 449CZK per month. The link is:
