I just installed it and spoke to a friend of mine in France - amazing! Much clearer than a normal telephone, but there was a slight lag at first.
Here's a fawning review in the NYT I read yesterday:

Telecoms are quickly trying to find a way to keep this from wrecking their business. There's also a new wireless protocol being developed that will allow people to use P2P (IP telephony) over a wide area - 1 cell to every 5 kilometers in a city - even less in the country. Wi-Fi on steroids... I wonder if anyone's made a wireless IP phone yet? |

Just came across this article saying that the UK is assigning the prefix 056 for VoIP numbers:
- http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=internetNews&a mp;amp;storyID=6158418
Cool!
I like the comment near the bottom: "BT has established an Internet phone service of its own, in part to fend off upstarts such as Skype." Heh. Upstarts! |

Update (unless you've noticed already): Skype is now a world-wide phone operator, if you buy credit from them you can make calls to MANY local phone networks for normal prices, inluding Czech Republic. Skype-to-Skype calls are to remian free tho. |

filip, you are so right. i've been making call after call to both land and mobile lines in the u.s. for EUR .02 a minute. it took me forever to exhaust to euros worth. of course, someone smarter than me can probably tell me exactly how long it took. the math's pretty easy. |

skype is fine as long you want to talk to another skpye user or a mobile or fixnet-number. The problem occurs the other way round (except for the other skype users): fixnet-users or mobile users can't call you on your skype account!!! |

i agree, it is a bitch to actually buy the credits, however, chances are, if you are waiting a month, it didn't go through, and you should try again...
they have improved a bit, and if you know someone who can buy credits, try using the skypegroups, just give them the cash, and they can charge your account...
rumors are, that they have something brewin with google's new "paypal" system to make it easier to buy, but nothing official. |

Sure, there are many out there, but why should we use another?
Skype's interface makes it easier to call, video call, use voice mail, conference and call actual telephone numbers, plus it forwards to your CZ mobile phone if you set it up to do so...
plus, it's file transfer and work-around firewalls is far better than other apps. When they actually get skype 2 beta for apple, it will mean you can video-call between the two, easily. ( yes, it can be done now, but it is a major pain in the ass ) It would be cool if skype could somehow work like trillian, to allow for IM, ICQ, IRC, MSN, YAHOO, and maybe jabber to work all in one, but for the time being, There is nothing that comes close... |

there is a plug in for skype called skyllian. But I found it buggy and clunky. New release might address some of these things. I am waiting for 1.0 and then I'll try it again |

hey joey, cat got yer tongue?
btw, since i wrote #20, they have a voucher system, and you no longer need an international credit card to purchase credits. they recently added an additional payment methods in the Skype Store. You can now purchase Skype Credit via Moneybookers.com, Paypal or Bank Transfer.
skritek, were you using Trillian PRO, or just the free trillian with the Skylian? I understand it makes a difference... |

We just installed Skype to talk to people back in the states with. It's too good to be true. Even if you do call someone on a landline with Skypeout it's still cheaper than the best AT&T Intl rates. And I LOVE the quality. I used to deal with phone interfaces for media broadcasts and this service kicks but over any old Gentner or TelosOne system on plain old telephone service lines. I even got a local Los Angeles line for people to call on and it rings on my computer in Praha. NICE! |

Try "Voipstunt" (www.voipstunt.com) , which allows FREE calls to landlines in several European countries (not Czecho yet, but Slovakia IS included), Australia, New Zealand and North America...
Skype and Voipstunt are a nice combination, and Voipstunt calls are as clear as Skype calls..... |

Incidentally, has anyone tried Voipbuster yet? Apparently they offer a free land-line phone number that people can call you on - in the Czech Republic:
Sounded like spyware at first, but I can't find anything suspicious about them on the normal sites so seems legit. Anyone signed up? |

sorry for my skype-uber-alles there, my phone bill was 35,000 czk less last year due to 75 euro worth of skype credits, so i am always gonna defend them, of course, if there is something better i am all for it, i just haven't seen it yet.
haven't tried voipbuster, will try it...
there are many comparisons out there talkin bout the pros and cons of skype vs. voipbuster, but it doesn't support text chatting or peer-to-peer calls, so it just means one more thing open... there is also Gizmo, anyone tried it yet? http://www.gizmoproject.com seems Gizmo Project and Google Talk are now connected! and we all know google talk and gmail are now connected, so wooHooo! |

By the way, if you don't use your skype credit, they take it away from you! Just for not using it, so lost 8 euros, no big deal, but in principle it sucks! |

I think Mobile In-voice is better than skype. Why?
thru mobile in-voice can dial direct the Globe from your mobile. cheaper and save 80% on international calls and dial to Mobile In-voice user its free. |

Going back to Micah's #2 post: I'm shocked that no one has done this. It's waiting to be done. The Czech Republic has such a huge penetration rate that it makes sense to saturate the country with long-range Wi-Fi and offer inland telephoning for free.
Make money off the handsets, international calls, or even make it ad based. It wouldn't be that hard or costly to implement and would be a nearly-instant death grip to the multi-billion dollar phone industry here. |
