Hi EmmaLouise,
I'm hoping to be teaching in Prague by early March....just wanted to check in and see how things are going for you?
Let me know! |

First, don't expect to make the kind of money you were told you would make. Average starting pay for teaching, especially through a "school", is 200CzK/hr. before taxes. And, with most schools, you will be running all over the city to teach unless you were lucky enough to connect with a school that has on-site teaching.
This is not like moving from Chicago to LA! Better do some homework about living here, expenses, housing and the culture. Have you bothered to look into what it costs to live here? Yeah, I know, you probably don't think you will need much. Well, better check into things. First thing to look into is the exchange rate for the dollar. You will be changing lots of dollars before you get your first salary. And, your dollar isn't going to go very far these days. Check the history of the slide for the past 18 months.
AND, don't believe everything your school has told you so far! There are lots of things they have not bothered to mention.
Been living here for 4 years. Moved from the States and have Resident Status. Seen a lot of "teachers" come over here and become disappointed because "it's not like home". Well, it isn't home, or America or anyplace else. It is the Czech Republic' not a suburb of Denver.
Again, do your research and open your eyes before coming. Sorry if I have rained on your parade but I don't want to see another expat disappointed.

I started teaching here over 7 years ago, working for Via Lingua (where I took the TEFL course). SEVEN years ago I was paid more than 240kc per 45 minute lesson *AFTER* TAXES, HEALTH INSURANCE, etc.
These days, pay is much higher. I can't think of any teacher, either independent or with a REPUTABLE school that would work for what I keep seeing listed here.
Frankly, anyone who works full time, and can't make decent money teaching here, should pack it in and go home to mommy. |

The operative word is "REPUTABLE". Checkout the teaching offers listed here and elsewhere and look at what they are offering to pay. After 7 years, I would hope your pay is much higher. But, starting out and being new here in the city, the rates aren't all that great!

Thanks for the info - I have done my research, so I am going into this with my eyes wide open. The school I have an offer from is the Caledonian School and from what I can tell is reputable, but would love some feedback if you have any. I'm in this for the adventure, not to make millions. |

I am also moving over to Prague in September. I will be getting TEFL certified in Madrid in July-August. My friends are over there now studying abroad, apparently it is ABSURD. Can't wait. |

A few years back I worked at Caledonian School and was paid 215kc ($14, 9.30€ or £7.41 per 45 minutes). Not great money but they pay for your travel expenses. If you do some private calsses to supplement your income and flat share you can have a fairly decent standard of living. Have fun! I did! |
