Many thanks.

The Czech Republic's currency is the Koruna (Crown), and uses the identifier CZK.

http://prague.tv/exchange-rates/

EUROS can be used in some few places.
(The Delvita near my house for example. :)
sambeckwith sambeckwith - [profile] Mon May 17th 15:21 2004 / #2
The official currency is still the koruna but some bigger stores and more tourist-oriented places accept euros.

Have booked and paid for accomodation for the week already. Will want to do the normal touristy things and eat of course. Just really wanted to get an idea of how much stuff costs? e.g. day excursions, travel (bus, taxi, train?), restaurants/tipping? etc

Thanks Truck

If you're familiar with British currency, it's easiest to think of 50 crowns as being one pound, 100 crowns is roughly two quid, 500 crowns is a tenner, etc. That's not exactly right but it's a useful guide - it's pretty simple really.

(If you're more familiar with American currency, 30 crowns is roughly one dollar.)

It's likely that most Czech people you deal with here will speak at least some English, and many Czech people, particularly in Prague, speak it well.

If you're here for the first time, I'd make sure you see all the main sights, particularly Old Town Square, Charles Bridge and the Prague Castle. They're touristy but they need to be done.

As for "don'ts", here are three pieces of advice from the PTV archive:

PICKPOCKETS
Watch out for pickpockets. Usually acting in groups and frequently dressed like well-off tourists, they hit unsuspecting tourists at the doors of trams and metros or other crowded places. Be particularly careful on trams 14, 17, 22 and 23. Be aware of your belongings in bars and restaurants too. (And if you're chatting with the over-friendly ladies of Wenceslas Square after dark, make sure your wallet is safe.)

TAXIS
To avoid getting ripped off, don't hail taxis on the street. Either ask the staff at your hostel or bar to call you a cab or call one of the city's more reputable English-speaking companies:
* AAA: 233 113 311
* ProfiTaxi: 231 415 161

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
On the city's public transport system, make sure you've bought and stamped a valid ticket before you travel. Carefully check the English-language information on ticket vending machines (in all metro stations and at some tram stops).

Do they have banks in the Cechia?
todd todd - [profile] Thu Aug 12th 18:08 2004 / #11
Tons: here's a few http://prague.tv/search/venues.php?q=banks
[ anonymous ] - [anon] Thu Aug 12th 18:20 2004 / #12
Yes there are banks but the exchange rates are less than excellent (although better than a number of the places in the city centre!)
Ronald McDonald - [anon] Thu Aug 12th 21:11 2004 / #13
McDonalds takes USD, EURO and CZK.
IF you pay in USD/EURO, they give you change in CZK...
NO COMMISSION, and the registers are tied into a system giving the most up to date national rates...

So, go into McDonalds, with a $100 bill, buy a 4kc packet of Ketchup, and tell the banks and change places to **** off!

paul2 - [anon] Tue Sep 21st 18:05 2004 / #16
Tips:

Beware of pickpockets.

Learn a couple of easy essential phrases of Czech ( if your group's mainly going to be in the capital, don't bother, most people speak English).

If you need a taxi, take AAA or Profitaxi.

Change money here in Prague in a bank.

Above all, you'll love it here, so beware of not joining the happy expats living here! We welcome you all the same! Enjoy!

Hi
What's the average price for a meal and what is a local delicacy please?
Also what is the national drink?
todd todd - [profile] Wed Mar 30th 13:30 2005 / #30
Hello Wendy, the average price of a meal depends really on which meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) and what kind of meal you are after. There are some incredibly cheap and expensive places to eat in Prague, but you can get some very tasty meals which are lean on your wallet.

Average lunch prices in Czech pubs will run you about 100 CZK with meal drink and tip. Most middle range restaurants offer lunch specials so you can eat and have a drink for about 150 CZK. Dinner of course is a little more expect to pay between 250 - 500 CZK at a nicer place.

You can eat cheap all over town hot dogs 15 CZK, potato pancakes 20CZK, old school pub gulash and 1 beer for 60 CZK.

Beer prices range from 16 - 90 CZK (though please don't ever pay over 30 CZK it only encourages them to raise the prices :)

National drink if you are in Bohemia it's got to be beer if you are in Moravia it's slivovice all the way.

Enjoy your trip

How much is a taxi from the airport to Wencelas square?
todd todd - [profile] Sat Apr 9th 11:52 2005 / #34
450-600, a better option are these shared airport vans which charges between 150 - 300 per person, it takes a little longer, but you won't get ripped off. You will see them when you walk out of the airport.

Happy travels

We will be in Prague on 30 April. Because the USD has been in the basement so long I have been trying to maximize our limited spending money by getting the best exchange rate possible. They are all over the place. So, a question for those of you who have been to or are in Prague. Where is the best place to exchange money once we get there? I thought it was the American Express office until I saw their exchange rate which seems quite low.

Anyway, we can get it here or there. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot

Not sure about what you mean for a "good time", but if you each have 2,000 CZK in your pocket you'll have enough for a late night fried cheese sandwich on Vaclevak.

sorry Tommy, life is busy, sooooooo, weather in October...same as London..or Dublin/Belfast, i.e 16 C. In terms of amount of money you need, as I have said before depends on what you want to do. You can get by for very cheap, 1,500 (cheaper if you go old school) per day including food and fun, here's some prices:

beer (non tourist trap spots) 20-30 CZK
lunch (non tourist trap spots) 65-150 CZK
Dinner (non tourist trap spots) 150-300 CZK
Club entrances (not brothels) 150-300 CZK
public transportation - all day pass 70 CZK
Accommodation - hostel- 450, apartment - 900 (per person) hotel - 1,500

anything else in particular you are interested in? When are you coming?

skin - [profile] Wed Jul 27th 16:16 2005 / #59
If you've got one Isa bring a bank card and use ATMs they gave best rates. Don't change money in the bureau de change's that are everywhere, the rate is almost 20% below what it should be. If you do, check the boards for, We Buy/We Sell rates, and the high rate advertised is only for amounts over 1000 euros. I'm lead to believe that if you go into Irish bars they'll often change hard currency at the going rate, and then help you spunk it double quick. For those who asked how much per night for a meal and piss up you should get change from 50euros if you leave the strip bars and rip off taxis. Though you'll probably do double that.
As for Mr Big Toes I don't know how late bars are open to in euros 24 hours in time 300ck is about 10 euro weather in october is bring a coat for the evenings and pac-a-mac for rain or a brolly but you'll need some sort of time machine and a definitive list to do everything in three nights yes im that thick thy dont have a clue about prague ye mick knob the best place for ease and quality of prositutes you wont speak about to find when you get here solicite around wencleslas square as mention somes faces are hairy but they are pretty much female and if you dont want full sex are nice to just chat with its cheaper than the escort agencys and they get all the money not the middle man

Big Toe,

Yes the site is meant to help tourists trying to find out about Prague. It also serves as a forum for Czechs and Expats to exchange ideas and thoughts in a relatively (mostly) informed manner.

For me it's most unique quality, however, is it's ability to identify, weed-out and discourage colostomy bags like yourself from smearing yourself all over it's streets in an utterly drunken frenzy of ignorance and ineptitude.
The Grinning Lemur The Grinning Lemur - [profile] Tue Apr 25th 12:05 2006 / #64
Yes.

And that's purely my own opinion and in no way reflects those of the PTV staff.

#62:
1) I'd say about CZK 600 (USD 25) by cab from the airport. Or CZK 20 by public transportation (bus 119 to Dejvicka, then tram 26)
2) Moderate lunch CZK 100. Beer, wine CZK 30. Coctails CZK 100.
3) Within the city: Troja - ZOO, Botanical Garden, Chateau; Zbraslav Chateau; Brevnov monastery
Outside the city: various castles (e.g. Karlstejn, Konopiste, Krivoklat, Kokorin) and towns (e.g. Kutna Hora)

Tommy,

YES, this site is meant to help people get around / get to know Prague, BUT they are ways of asking questions, arent there ?

Ever heard of :

"Treat people how you would wish to be treated"

"Its nice to be important, but its more important to be nice"

I suggest that if you intend on sticking around in this forum, you learn some manners, or at least use it when you're not pissed out of your brains on Special Brew ! Otherwise, you wont get much help from the very knowledgeable people here...

that amount quoted is TOO MUCH

Telephone AAA Cabs (DONT HAIL THEM - RING THEM)

14014

Make sure you tell them where you are going and give you a quote - and ask them to instruct the driver to use his METER

the taxis here are somewhat dishonest

If you are staying in the centre from the airport the fare could be as little as 300 to 400 if you RING the OPERATOR at AAA (not HAIL them as they have no control from their base and will take you for a ride)

good luck

Hello

Going to Prague for 2 nights/3 days in October.

Is it better to book accommodation in advance or when you are there?

We are looking for accommodation that is open until early hours of the morning as we are planning to stay out late and drink a lot. I like the idea of stopping on Wenceslas Square or old town as the buildings and land marks are important to me.
What sort of price should I be looking at for two nights and if I need to book any suggestions?

Is visa electrons taken in ATMs/banks?

We would like to eat at nice restaurants for each meal, drink a lot until the early hours of the morning and do a couple of touristy things.

How much would you say to bring spending money?

Anywhere spectacular you'd recommend us going on our short stay?

Thanks

2- where the best places are in the city to get away from the tourists and find nice pubs/cafes/restaurants that wont rip us off ?
