I'm coming to Prague at the end of November for 2 nights as I'm treating my girl to a weekend away. We're staying on Wencelas Square (sorry of thats spelt wrong). I'm a little worried about safety etc at night? Should I be, or is it fine? Thanks. I've heard good things about Prague - just hope its true! Oh, and do you have snow in late november because she loves it! Thanks!

Tim-

It is safe. But as in all big cities, you have to watch your back a little bit if you are out late at night. The most dangerous thing you stumble across will probably be a hooker cat-fight or a liquored up stag party.

Snow in November? Possible, but not a certainty. Have fun!

On Vaclavak the biggest nuisances are people trying to drag you into strip shows, stag parties (as Hawaii rightly mentioned), and advertising shoved down your throat at every glance. All hail the new Prague!

Interesting photo of Vac pre-advertising:

Thanks for the replies. Thats the only thing I'm really worried about really. Pretty sure about everything else, just the safety at night!! Its not too bad when there's a group of you, so just wanted to check it'd be ok.

Lookin forward to it. She doesnt know where we're goin so hopefully she'll enjoy it. By the way, whats the shopping like? And is it more expensive than say the UK?

cheaper than the UK definately, yeah my tip is be aware on public transportation, lots of pick pockets here, not trying to scare you, just be conscious, and remember anyone getting on a tram or metro with an open map in a big group IS A PICKPOCKET with several accomplices around him working the crowd......

enjoy your journey :)

I'd be well wary of pick-pockets, had my mp3 nicked whilst using a pay phone, freely admit it wouldn't of happened in a state of sobreity, but they will go for any Johnny Foreigner hanging about with a beer inside them, gypo birds mainly trying to engage you in conversation.
Shoppings okay todd, steer her clear of Paris St off the old town square or you could spend a few quid, I don't find any clothes shops cheaper here than UK, most locals I know use the usual chains, Mango, H&M, Zara etc, M&S even.
I wouldn't bother spending too long around Wenclas square mind you, plenty of better spots, you should have a sparkling time. You can't beat it for a weekend away.

re: safety
You should not be concerned about safety unless you are very stupid. There is very little violence and that is mostly drunken Brits who get argumentative and pugnacious when they have had a few. They expect violence and usually get it. Just avoid them. Cz wold be better without these vermin and I am English. Compared to a night out in, say, newcastle, prague is definately safer. Pickpockets - just use common sense: seal pockets and make sure you dont get crowded. Just a word of warning: if you want to USE violence, say towards a taxi driver, however much they deserve it, you will get a kicking off the police and the jails arent much fun. ( I visited one as part of my job n case youre wondering)

Very safe. No problems in the many years here.
Watch Out - [anon] Wed Mar 1st 14:55 2006 / #8
The biggest danger appears to be from the club agents who, if you look like a tourist, and if you are in a group of 2 or more, will round you up and or harrass you until you go to their club.

You just need to tell them promptly to f*&k off and go back to Nigeria. That should work. If not, some Russian friends of mine will help you.

You have to wonder why someone responds to a question where the LAST response was over a year ago.

And yet again...

Katsy, I'll try to explain this to you in a simple way, so that a simple mind can understand...

The original post on this thread was made in October of 2005. It says the person is coming to Prague about 6 weeks later, and asking about safety. HE WAS HERE AND (PROBABLY) GONE TWO YEARS BEFORE "THEGAZ" answered his question. It was also A YEAR AND 8 MONTHS after the latest post in the thread.

At that late date, it was maybe a teeny tiny bit lacking in relevance.

by the way, it's spelled "whine"

hihi,

I have been to Prague twice and it was safe. Me and my friends ( 4 of us) are coming to Prague for a new years eve and we would like to take a dinner in some nice lounge and have a good coctails. Somebody have any good ideas about places?
