Ye Olde Merrye Festivalle

PTV goes medieval in Dobřichovice

Posted September 17th, 2007 - Micah Jayne

Yes, you've seen them. Skinny long-hairs clad in chain mail, hefting battle axes wrapped in burlap onto the back of the tram car. Did you ever wonder what the **** they were getting into? Micah Jayne travels to Dobřichovice, just past the outskirts of Prague along the Berounka river, and discovers a magical world full of... well... regular people who like to dress up and whack each other with replica swords! The medieval festival is a favorite in the Czech countryside, sprinkled as it is with beautiful old castles and ruins. For thousands of families, these festivals offer a great excuse to get the kids out of the city and enjoy some good, old-fashioned country living - replete with burnt klobasky and pivo for mom and dad.

Burdyři, a group that takes center stage at many of these festivals, has been at it since the late 70's and perform nearly 200 shows a year. Find out about their next performance at: www.burdyri.com

Dobřichovice sports a fine castle and beautiful hiking and fishing along the Berounka river. More about the town - Transport info
