Movits!

Swedish hip hop/swing hybrid Movits! will play Lucerna Music Bar on Wednesday, February 10th.

Formed in the mid 00’s by Johan Jivin' Rensfeldt (vocals), Anders Rensfeldt (multi-instrumentalist and DJ) and saxophonist Joakim 'One-Take' Nilsson, Movits! began playing shows around Scandinavia and released their first album, Äppelknyckarjazz, in 2008. Singing in Swedish, the band never thought they would get play anywhere outside of their country – until American satirical talk show host Stephen Colbert discovered one of their songs and invited them to play his show. Following their appearance on The Colbert Report, the band’s album took off on Amazon.com, and they soon found themselves being booked for huge music festivals like Glastonbury.

Their sound incorporates both live instrumentation and samples, and joins two very disparate genres: swing and hip hop. “It was like a three-way, simultaneous revelation” Joakim recalls of their early experiments with swing. “We were out dancing in a backyard, when someone put on Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing. The three of us were totally blown away!”

Their most recent album, They Tried to Bury Us, They Didn't Know We Were Seeds, came out in 2015.
