Prague Drum ’n’ Bass Festival coming to three venues

The action starts at Štvánice ostrov before moving to Cross Club and Face2Face

Drum ’n’ bass (DnB) has been shaking music club floors since the early 1990s. The first Prague Drum ’n’ Bass Festival takes place Aug. 19 to the early morning hours of Aug. 20 at Štvánice ostrov and the music venues Cross Club and Face2Face.

The event begins on Štvánice ostrov, where music will play from 1 pm to 10 pm. Events start at Cross Club at 5 pm and at Face2Face at 10 pm, both lasting till morning. The headliners from the Czech scene are DJ Rido, Philip T.B.C. and Brooklyn and from abroad Ukrainian NickBee and British legend Spikey Tee. French Reggae band Joe Pilgrim & The Ligerians and live dub band Collective Tones will also play.

Rido released his debut album Rhythm of Life in 2016. Mixing for nine years, Rido waited a long time before letting it out. “Until now I hadn’t felt that the time was right for me to craft a whole album. I wanted to go back to the times when you wrote the album as a whole instead of a collection of individual tracks that would work on the dance floor or on the radio,” he said previously.

Phillip T.B.C.'s mixes cover DNB, dubstep, hiphop, breakbeat, wonka, and he doesn’t hesitate to go elsewhere. He often borrows from electronic band The Prodigy.

Prodigy co-founder Liam Howlett invited Phillip T.B.C. to open for The Prodigy at the Slovak festival Pohoda in 2015. He also mixed at Let IT Roll, Cosmic Trip, Openairfield, Nočné Vlny, Summer of Love and Planet Roxy happenings. The 2009 album Audible Thoughts earned him multiple awards. His latest album is Kokoro No Hibiki from 2012.

Slipping into downtempo is Brooklyn. Also performing as Juanita Juarez, Brooklyn became popular after his 2003 debut album Spa Boy gained people's attention. The same year he was invited for Red Bull Music Academy’s music workshop in Cape Town, South Africa. One of the mixes produced there caught eye of French newspaper Le Monde. In recent years Brooklyn has made music for theater, films and commercials. After 100 shows performed in past two years, the young Czech DJ is a sought-after name.

NickBee has been on the Ukrainian drum ’n’ bass scene since the age of 15. Starting at Atomic Club in Dnipropetrovsk in 2006 he quickly became popular in the rest of Europe. His 2012 collaboration with Ukraine DnB legend Sunchase resulted in the 12-inch release “Summo.” Working with Belarusian musician Malk and British singer Zelda Marshall on minimalistic but deep tracks, he released the newest EP called The Shattered this April.

Growing from reggae sound systems, Spikey Tee was a pioneer of UK hip hop. Co-founder of the band The Sindecut, he watched drum ’n’ bass climb from London pirate radio stations. Toying with hip-hop, R&B and drum ’n’ bass, Spikey always stays close to Reggae. Mixing and singing for last 20 years took him to Sweden, the Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Russia, Finland, United States and Australia, where he now lives.

More than two dozen DJs are scheduled to perform.
