The Sweet coming to Lucerna's Velký sal

The glam rock band is on what is likely their final tour

British glam rock band The Sweet will be playing at Lucerna's Velký sal on Friday, Oct. 20, following shows in Brno Sono Centrum on Oct. 19 and Ostrava's Multifunkční aula Gong on Oct. 18.  It is billed as the Last Encore Tour, so fans who have never seen them should go.

The band features classic-era guitarist Andy Scott plus drummer Bruce Bisland, bassist Pete Lincoln and keyboardist Tony O'Hora.

The tour title Last Encore refers to the band has had a so-called Final Tour in 2015. But they only said it would “probably” be the end of the line. Many bands have had comebacks after a planned final tour revived interest in the group.

“Performing is at the very heart of what we do and though fashions change, our songs have lasted through five decades. When we're up on the stage in front of an audience it's almost as if time has stood still,” frontman Scott said in 2015.

The band's biggest hits include “The Ballroom Blitz,” which in this tour has been sometimes been in the encore. “Fox on the Run” has been closing out the main set.

The Sweet's roots go back to 1968 as Sweetshop as a bubblegum band, but they changed their sound and lineup so by 1971 when they released their debut album, Funny How Sweet Co-Co Can Be, they were called Sweet (or The Sweet) and had a harder glam rock sound.

Their success took off in 1972 with the non-album single “Little Willy,” which hit number four in the UK charts and number one in Germany and Canada. This was followed rapidly by the single “Wig-Wam Bam,” which also hit the charts in 1972. “Block Buster!” and “The Ballroom Blitz,” released in 1973, continued to hit the top spots in charts in the UK, Germany, Canada and Australia.

The 1975 album Desolation Boulevard spawned the hit “Fox on the Run” and the 1976 album Give Us a Wink contained the hit “Action.” The 1978 album Level Headed contained their last major top 10 song, “Love is Like Oxygen.”

The album Identity Crisis came out in 1982, shortly after the band officially broke up.

Different members re-formed the group after that. Andy Scott put his version together in 1985, and that formation has evolved into the one that is currently on tour using the name The Sweet. This group also released a new album in 2012 called New York Connection.

The band's music has a lasting legacy, with Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses calling them one of his favorite bands. The song “The Ballroom Blitz” was featured in a trailer for Suicide Squad and “Fox on the Run” was featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
