Pearl Jam coming to O2 Arena

The Seattle rockers were last in Prague in 2012

Seattle rock band Pearl Jam is coming to Prague’s O2 Arena on July 1, 2018. Tickets to members of Pearl Jam’s fan club called Ten Club are on sale Dec. 1–8, and sales to the general public start Dec. 8 at noon.

The European summer tour will have 14 dates, starting in Amsterdam and ending in Lisbon.

It will be the band’s first concert in Prague since the 2012 European tour, and the first time they have been to Rome since 1996.

This will be Pearl Jam’s sixth concert in Prague. The first was in 1995 when the band members except for vocalist Eddie Vedder played with Neil Young to promote the album Mirror Ball. The full band appeared in Prague in 1996, 2000, 2006 and 2012.

Pearl Jam celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, the first year the band was eligible. Former talk show host David Letterman gave the speech at their induction after Neil Young canceled due to an illness. “"Every time they were there, they would blow the roof off the place. For two years I did a show without a roof on the damn theater," Letterman said.

The band's line-up is Eddie Vedder on lead vocals, Mike McCready on lead guitar, Stone Gossard on rhythm guitar, Jeff Ament on bass and Matt Cameron on drums. Boom Gaspar on the piano has been a touring member since 2002.

Pearl Jam’s 1991 debut album, Ten, launched their fame as a key band in the early 1990s grunge movement. They were also notable for opposing ticket company policies and refusing to give interviews or do publicity.

To date, they have released 10 studio albums and 15 live albums, as well as 314 “official bootlegs.” The band’s worldwide sales are estimated at over 60 million albums.

Five of their studio albums hit the number one spot on the charts, while four hit number two. The straggler, 2002’s Riot Act, peaked at number five.

The band has also been active in politics, promoting pro-choice issues, opposing George W. Bush's presidency, raising awareness of Crohn's disease, lobbying for environmental and wildlife protection, among other issues. The band has a carbon neutral policy, offsetting the band's environmental impact. They were also advocates for a group of teens the band felt were wrongfully convicted of murder. Listening to rock music was used as evidence against the trio. They have since been released, but not pardoned.

Pearl Jam is also active in voter registration in the US, as many young people do not bother to vote.
