Lenny Kravitz to play O2 Arena

The funk rock star will be releasing a new album called Raise Vibration

Rock star Lenny Kravitz is bringing his Raise Vibration tour to Prague’s O2 Arena on June 2. Tickets go on sale to Live Nation club members Jan. 24 at 9 am and to the general public Jan. 26 at 9 am.

Raise Vibration is the name of his as-yet-unreleased 11th studio album. The single “Are You Going To Be My Girl” was released on YouTube in August.

Prague is just the second date on the European tour, following Munich, Germany. The tour runs until July 21, snaking around Europe to end in Germany at the Stuttgart Jazzopen Festival.

This will be Kravitz’s sixth show in Prague since 1996. He was last in Prague in December 2014 as part of the Strut tour. Due to the date being rescheduled, it was the last show in that leg of the tour. Guitarist Carlos Santana made a guest appearance at the end of the concert.

Kravitz retro rock style is heavily influenced by R&B, funk, jazz, reggae and psychedelic music.

He has won four Grammy Awards, out of nine nominations. The awards are for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance on the songs “Fly Away,” “American Woman,” “Again” and “Dig In.” The wins came four times in a row between 1999 and 2002.

Among the many other prizes he has earned is Most Fashionable Artist, Male Award in the 1998 VH1 / Vogue Fashion Awards.

In 2011, Kravitz was made an Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by French cultural minister Frederic Mitterrand in Paris. He was successful in France before he made it big in the US.

He performed at Super Bowl XLIX in the halftime show, along with Katie Perry in 2015.

Aside from music, he has been involved in acting, with a large role as Cinna in the Hunger Games film series. More recently he has had a recurring role in the TV series Star as Roland Crane, the father of one of the main characters. Other appearances include a cameo in Zoolander No. 2.

Another venture that divides his time is Kravitz Design Inc., which he founded in 2003. The company does commercial, residential and product design. He also has designed furniture that is sold through another company.

Kravitz comes from show business family. His mother had a role on the TV show The Jeffersons, which brought his family to Los Angeles. He went to high school with actor Nicolas Cage and musician Slash.

Around that time became interested in retro-style music and began recording on vintage equipment before landing his first record deal. The funk-influenced Let Love Rule came out in 1989.

While he played almost all the instruments on the album, he had to create a band to tour with. He was the opening act for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bob Dylan and David Bowie.

He also played guitar on songs recorded by Mick Jagger and David Bowie, and he produced the Madonna song “Justify My Love.”

His 1993 song “Are You Gonna Go My Way” established him as a star, It reached No. 1 on the US Album Rock Tracks chart and did well internationally, but oddly did not make it into the Billboard Hot 100. The song has since been covered by everyone from Metallica to the Spice Girls.

The 2014 album Strut, his most recent, was released to good reviews and charted well internationally. The first single from his upcoming album Raise Vibration has made a moderate splash with 232,000 views in five months. The YouTube page for the single says the song “brings back his original raw sound.”

Comments are turned off on the YouTube page but on a different music forum, fans said they found themselves confusing it with a different song that has the same title as well as with Kravitz’ own earlier hit “Are You Gonna Go My Way.”

But it is not fair to judge the unreleased album based on one song’s title.

Likely, Kravitz upcoming tour will feature a wide selection from his more than quarter-century catalog of hits, as well as splashy, high-energy stage production. His previous appearances in Prague did not disappoint.
