Prague will have a St Patrick’s Day parade

A full day of events is planned at Rock Café and other venues

Prague will have the biggest St Patrick’s Day celebration ever on Saturday, March 17. Locations throughout the city will embrace Irish culture and friendship.

For the first time, there will be a parade from Hybernská Street (meeting time 2.30 pm / start 3 pm) around the city center through Old Town Square, Národní třída and Wenceslas Square and back to Hybernská Street. It is a fitting location as Hibernia is the Latin name for Ireland.

The musical headliner of the festival is the Celtic punk band Blood or Whiskey, while Desmond Elliot Prize-winning author Lisa McInerney will debut her new novel for Prague.

The program, sponsored by Irish Whiskey brand Jameson, will last from the afternoon till early in the morning of the next day.

Rock Café is the center of the event. Open Mic Night starts at 5 pm. It will also feature the well-known artists Zoe Hayter and Meow.

Songwriter Grainne Hunt will open the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, to be followed by Irish bard Travis O’Neill and his band His Cardinal Sins.

Irish punk rockers Blood or Whiskey are next. Since 1992 they have performed throughout Europe with their eclectic fusion of traditional Irish folk and old-school punk rock. Their last studio album, Tell the Truth and Shame the Devil, received critical acclaim.

This will be followed by DJ Tomsn, who will keep people dancing till the wee hours of the morning.

The second major venue is 36 Underground in Holešovice, for urban style and hip-hop. Irish rapper Kojaque will perform tracks from his recent album Deli Daydreams, which was released on Feb. 23. Prague is lucky to be one of is stops on his European tour.

Promising young Irish rapper Luka Palm, Slovak artist Zverina will also take the mic, along with Czech band MoveBreakers, with their fusion of electronic beats, instrumentals and on-stage energy.

Local talent DJ Brada, DJ Bica feat. MC Luis De Fumés, Selektor Boldrik and rapper Douny, will also hit the decks.

People can try DJing at a professionally hosted workshop, try shuffle dancing or just come out and enjoy the beatboxing show.

Charles University’s Kampus Hybernská on March 17 will host Irish themed workshops, as well as a Jameson degustation. There is no better place for you and your friends this St. Pat’s Day and no more appropriate venue, Hybernia after all is Latin for Ireland. Lisa McInerney will have a reading there March 16.

More venues will embrace the theme of Celtic joy this St. Patrick’s Day, such as Krymská in Vršovice, Kino Pilotů and Joshua Salon.

And with Jameson’s in mind, people can embrace the true Irish spirit and party till the sun comes up at the after party at Minimal Bar.

It’s an over 18 event, and if you buy your Rock Café ticket for Kč 150, you’ll get entry to both main venues. All other venues are free.
