Rapper G-Eazy coming to Prague for the first time

G-Eazy had a successful career so far with five albums, six mix-tapes and dozens of singles

American rapper and producer G-Eazy will make his first appearance in the Czech Republic on May 11th, part of a European tour presenting his latest album The Beautiful & Damned.

Gerald Earl Gillum, who goes by the stage name G-Eazy, has had a successful career with five albums, six mixtapes and dozens of singles. Incorporating elements from 1950s and 60s style with his black leather jacket and slicked-back hair à la James Dean, G-Eazy doesn't at first appear to be a modern rap artist. But his slow southern rhythm with trap beats and synths is undeniably hip-hop and has earned him massive appeal, working with artists from Lil Wayne to Britney Spears. "I've always wanted to be a star,” he told Rolling Stone in 2014. “I've always wanted to be an Elvis Presley or a Tupac...I have an addictive personality and fame is the most addictive drug there is.”

After his parents separated at the age of five, G-Eazy moved from his hometown of Oakland, California to the nearby city of Berkeley, where he grew up at his grandparents’ house in a poor neighborhood. He became influenced by the “hyphy” hip-hop sound, a term used to describe the rowdy urban culture and music of the Bay Area, akin to artists such as E-40 and Mac Dre. He began recording and producing at Berkeley High School, making his own CDs and artwork and selling mixtapes out of his backpack. His southern-inspired sound originated when he began attending Loyola University New Orleans in 2007, but his breakout success came in 2011 with the release of his The Endless Summer mixtape. The mixtape was well-received and featured his first notable track titled “Runaround Sue,” which sampled the 1961 doo-wop hit by Dion.

His debut studio album, These Things Happen, was released in 2014 and quickly became a commercial success, reaching the number 3 spot on the US Billboard 200 and topping US hip-hop charts. The album’s popularity resulted in a headlining worldwide tour along with performances at notable music festivals such as Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and Austin City Limits. G-Eazy’s second and most successful studio album, When It’s Dark Out, was released in 2015. Supported by the widely popular single “Me, Myself, & I,” a collaboration with singer Bebe Rexha, the project once again topped US Billboard charts and garnered mostly positive reviews. Since then, G-Eazy has embarked on several more tours, including co-headlining with fellow rapper Logic, and will now tour throughout Europe to celebrate his most recent album The Beautiful & Damned.

This latest project, released in December 2017, comes packed with a star-studded lineup including Halsey, Cardi B, A$AP Rocky, and Charlie Puth. An emotional and personal album, The Beautiful & Damned is the most mature and introspective record from G-Eazy, who describes it as an important crossroads in his career. "The concept of it is...like being a kid, having the dream of doing this, starting from square one, from outside looking in from without having nothing -- to chasing this dream, and then all these years down the road of following this yellow brick road trying to get to where you're going, one day waking up and being like, 'Did it take me where I wanted to go?' This fantasy of, like, sex, drugs, & rock 'n' roll is kinda clichéd, but it's clichéd for a reason. It's dark," says G-Eazy on the Angie Martinez Show for Power 105.1 in New York.

Tickets for G-Eazy at the Karlín Forum in Prague are on-sale now and will feature special guests Stefflon Don and Yung Pinch.
