Rock for People to start a day early

A warmup party on July 3 will feature Mydy Rabycad and other live acts

The music festival Rock for People (RfP) is scheduled to run July 4 to 6 at Hradec Králové, but the festival has added an extra warm-up day.

On Tuesday, July 3, the festival park will open for visitors with the Party for the Eager (Večírek pro nedočkavé).

The park will stay open until July 6 with music from around the world and summer festival fun.

The warm-up party will feature Mydy Rabycad, back from a US tour, along with indie rock bands I Love You Honey Bunny, who just released their debut album, and big-beat band Th!s. There will also be finalists in the Planetrox band contest, and the winner will get to tour Canada.

Entry to the party is Kč 190, but people with a three-day ticket can get in at no additional charge. Camping will also be available for the “zero day.”

When the festival starts in earnest, Rock For People visitors can see the English electronic dance music group The Prodigy, English rock bands The Kooks and The Vaccines, American rockers Skillet, Danish heavy metal star Volbeat, uninhibited Enter Shikari, and the German punk act Beatsteaks.

Film fans will be interested in seeing Rodriguez, the star of the 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. Rumors in South Africa, when it cut off from the rest of the world, said the obscure singer and songwriter was dead, but he is not and will be live onstage.

Other acts include Marmozets, Stick To Your Guns, Sick Puppies, Albert Hammond Jr., and Blossoms.

There will also be a tribute to the late Czech guitarist Radim Hladík, who passed away in December 2016 at the age of 69. He had been active on the Czech and Czechoslovak music scenes since 1964.

Members of his former band Blue Effect will play some of his songs. Popular Czech musicians David Koller, Michal Dvořák and Lenka Dusilová will also participate.

The festival also has a lot of established Czech and Slovak bands, plus new ones making a name for themselves. Names include Gaia Mesiah, Horkýže Slíže, Vypsaná fiXa and Tři sestry. From the club scene there is From Our Hands, Krang, Burning Steps and Pilot Season.

From the alternative scene there is Ghost of You, Pla Ces, Radical Miracle and Branko’s Bridge. Hardcore acts include Fall From Everest, Glad For Today, Brando’s Eyes and Severals.

There is also psychobilly, ska, garage rock, electro swing, rap metal, folk, and much more.

Rock for People, as its name suggests, is dominated by rock but there is also some dance music. The biggest afterparty will be July 5 after The Prodigy finishes, with a DJ set by Sigma. The act has sold over 3 million singles and has worked with Rita Ora, Birdy and Take That.

Also for dance music fans is the Portal Show, a stage styled like a giant intergalactic portal. It will be brought by the organizers of the world's biggest drum and bass festival, Let It Roll.

Rock for People began in 1995 in Český Brod, and in 2007 it moved to Hradec Králové. In 1995 the festival attracted 1,100 visitors to watch 18 bands. In recent years this had risen to about 30,000 visitors to see 200 bands.
