DJ Loutka had passed away

A cornerstone of the Czech club scene is gone at age 51

One of the icons of the Czech dance music scene, DJ Loutka, has passed away at age 51. DJ Loutka was the stage name for Michal Maudr. He died on the night of Aug. 18–19 in his apartment.

DJ Loutka in particular was famous for playing at Roxy in Prague 1, but seemed to be on the line up for every big dance event since the early 1990s. Roxy made a statement on its Facebook page.

“Not many words are needed, perhaps only [that] our close friend, a wonderful person, a DJ legend and a basic pillar (not only) of the ROXY Club has left. You will be missed, Michael, at the very least because you have done it like no one else. You have given thousands of people beautiful memories as well as musical and human moments that they will never forget. Respect and honor of your memory. We thank you for everything,” the post stated.

Czech tabloids reported that the cause of death was suicide.

DJ Loutka’s last post on his own Facebook page, dated Aug. 16, invited fans to come and see him Aug. 25 at a music festival at Máchovo jezero. The intro to his Facebook page says: Loutka can rightly be considered a cornerstone of the Czech underground electronic dance music scene.

Fans shared memories over Facebook, thanking him and mentioning when they had seen him. “The world will not be like before,” one fan said. “Thanks for all the euphoria. … It will never be forgotten,” was another comment.

Another fan simply asked, “Why?”

Fellow DJ Carlos Squint was among his colleagues to express remorse. “For years you've been a brother to me that I never had; I don’t have words except maybe you've found your peace; let the music accompany you forever, R.I.P,” he said on Facebook, adding photos of them together in happier times.

Loutka is considered one of the most prominent figures in the Czech house scene, along with DJ Tráva.

He began his career in 1991 in the Prague club Bunkr, which has long been shuttered, and then moved to the Futurum club and later became resident at Roxy club. There he co-founded the club night Roxydust.

DJ Loutka played on the same programs as Carl Cox, Darren Emmerson, Silicon Soul, Terry Francis and DJ Sneak.
