Wynchester coming to Rock Cafe

The Southern rock band features a guitarist from Tenacious D

The Southern rock band Wynchester will be at Rock Cafe on Sept. 2. The band is actually a duo of Mike Bray and John Konesky, both playing guitar and singing.

Bray is the frontman of Kyle Gass Band and Konesky is an electric guitarist who has played and toured Tenacious D, which is actor Jack Black’s band. They formed

Wynchester in 2012 as a side project to their other projects, and originally played covers before delving into their own original material.

The band has mostly played at clubs in California, but this year they began playing international dates for the first time.

Wynchester has been described as having a classic approach to country music, mixed with the familiar sounds of Southern and classic rock.

The duo has two recordings, 2014’s five-track EP called Spreading the Gospel of Good Times and 2018’s self-titled debut album Wynchester.

The band stresses that they are simply doing what they want to do. “After the last couple years of writing and touring, we felt it was probably time to start laying down the songs that would become our first full-length album. This is the record we always wanted to make, crafted with love, and a handful of very talented friends,” the band said when they were raising funds to finance their full-length debut.

“We are 100 percent independent, and we’d like to stay that way,” they added.

The two take music seriously, but with the wink of an eye. Their repertoire hits all of the Southern rock motifs from uptempo barn burning, truck driving songs to "tear in your beer” ballads.

They are influenced by Southern greats like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers Band, and Charlie Daniels, as well as songwriters such as Jimmy Web, Willie Nelson, Marty Robbins, and John Prine. They also tap into the sense of humor of acts such as Dr. Hook, Jerry Reed and Brad Paisley.

They take a modern approach to classic songwriting; songs that tell tales, songs of heartbreak, and even some comedic numbers.

At their live shows, Wynchester presents themselves as a sharp dressed high energy act that will keep your boots tapping till closing time.
