Americká Street will be made great again

The annual block party in Prague 2 promises to be better than last year’s edition

The block party on Americká Street in Prague 2, just off of náměstí Míru, will be one of the larger events in this year’s Zažít město jinak (Different City Experience) festival, Saturday, Sept. 15. Events will start at 11 am and run to about 10 pm, when city noise regulations will call things to a halt.

The party will be similar to last year’s, which was highly successful. “The event is to bring the neighbors and the neighborhood together,” festival organizer Omri Goz said.

The area around Americká Street, just like the country it is named for, is somewhat of a melting pot. It has restaurants, bars and stores representing many cultures. The people living there are also from all over Europe and the rest of the world.

“We are going to have presentations of different communities. … Everyone is going to show off their cuisine. We are going to have fun; there are four stages, music, activities for children. [It is] basically just to have fun,” he added.

The party will run all along Americká Street, which will be divided into several thematic sections with stages and places to relax and hang out with friends.

La Calle Mexicana will showcase Latin American food and culture. Festivities will be centered around Las Adelitas restaurant near the intersection with Jana Masaryka Street. Tacos, tequila and jalapeños will be heavily represented in stands not only from Las Adelitas but many other Latin American restaurants.

The day will start with a Mexican dance ceremony and the creation of a flower pyramid.

During the day, dance and new circus acts will give performances, and there will be music from live acts and DJs on the festival’s main stage.

Mexican Independence Day will be celebrated in cooperation with the Mexican Embassy.

Radio 1 & Friends will have a stage at the traffic circle, with DJs and a two-hour set by Zdeněk Lichnovský.

There will be a Balkan BBQ Stage near Uruguayská Street near Bad Jeff’s restaurant, with live music from the Band of Jakeys and others.

There will be live comedy in throughout the day as well at this stage, with local performers in three languages including English. The comedy is sponsored by Prague.TV, which is also one of the partners for the festival itself.

Bad Jeff will be serving ribs, beer and other treats near the stage.

There will also be DJ s at the corner of Rumunská Street.

Aside from food and beverages, some nonprofit organizations will have stands to raise awareness of issues and also raise money by selling items.

MINT market will be present with fashions and design items.

The Bulgarian Orthodox community will have a photo display as well as stands with food, wine and spices.

Tichá kavárna (Silent Cafe) will give people a chance to order in sign language.

A list of some of the participating restaurants and pubs and lineups of acts for the stages can be found online at the Zažít město jinak website and on Facebook.
