Mark Knopfler coming to Prague’s O2 Arena

The ex-Dire Straits guitarist has a new solo album coming out in November

Guitarist and singer Mark Knopfler will be coming to Prague’s O2 Arena on June 26, 2019, in support of his ninth studio solo album, Down the Road Wherever. The tour is billed as An Evening with Mark Knopfler and Band.

Tickets to Live Nation club members go on sale Oct. 30 at 10 am, and to the general public Nov. 2 at 9 am.

All customers who buy presale tickets through, starting Oct. 29 at 8 am, will receive a live recording from the forthcoming tour. Information on registering for online sales is available on the website.

The announced European leg of the tour is quite extensive, starting in Barcelona, Spain, on April 25, and ending in Verona, Italy, on July 22, 2019, before jumping to North America in August.

Knopfler is perhaps still best-known as the former frontman of Dire Straits, which he was part of from 1977 to ’95. He has been pursuing a solo career since 1996.

Down the Road Wherever is set for release Nov. 16. The new album was created at Knopfler’s own British Grove Studios in West London. He worked with long-time producer collaborator Guy Fletcher on the follow-up to his 2015 album Tracker.

He said touring is an integral part of the album’s release process, from songwriting to recording to concerts featuring both old and new songs.

“I love the whole process of writing and recording with the band, but in the end the best part is playing to a live audience. I love the whole circus, traveling from city to city, and I'm really excited to work with this group of musicians,” Knopfler said in a press release.

Knopfler will tour with an extended 10-member band including musicians he has worked with for more than two decades: Guy Fletcher (keyboards), Richard Bennett (guitar), Jim Cox (piano), Mike McGoldrick (whistle and flute), John McCusker (violin and zither), Glenn Worf (bass), Danny Cummings (percussion) and Ian Thomas (drums). New to the lineup are Graeme Blebins (sax) a Tom Walsh (trumpet).

Knopfler’s last tour was in 2015 for Tracker, and typical setlists from then included about one-third of the songs from his Dire Straits era, including usually “Romeo and Juliet” and “Sultans of Swing,” and the rest from his solo material.

He has not hinted at what the new tour will include. His new album, though, has 20 tracks counting bonus tracks, and some material from that can be expected along with older hits. The video for the single “Good on You Son” was released in September.

He has been in Prague five times since 1996, but did not come for his 2015 tour. His last appearance was in 2013 on the Privateering song.

Dire Straits played at Prague’s Strahov Stadium in 1983 on the Love over Gold Tour.
