Def Leppard and Whitesnake coming to O2 Arena

Both hard rock acts are no strangers to Prague, and together promise a big event

Hard rock band Def Leppard is coming to Prague’s O2 Arena on June 17, 2019. Whitesnake will open the show. Tickets go on sale Nov. 2 at 10 am on the Ticketportal network.

Def Leppard was last in Prague in 2015, but before that, you have to go all the way back to 1996 for the Slang tour.

The Prague date was not in the original tour announcement. “New show added in Prague. Rocking Prague next year … with our friends Whitesnake/David Coverdale!” the band said rather briefly over social media.

The same summer tour will see the Def Leppard appear at the Sweden, Download, Rock the Ring, Trondheim and Tons of Rock festivals as well as stadium and arena dates. Prague is currently the fourth stop on the tour.

Def Leppard got together in 1977 in Sheffield during Britain’s new wave of heavy metal.

Unlike many metal bands, the lineup has been consistent for over a quarter century. Since 1992, the band has has Joe Elliott on lead vocals, Rick Savage on bass, Rick Allen on drums, Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell on guitars. Elliot and Savage are original members, Allen joined in 1978, Colleen in 1982 and Campbell in 1992.

Drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a car accident at the end of 1984, but compensated by using more drum pedals. He has become known as the “Thunder God” by his fans.

The band's most successful era was between the early 1980s and the early 1990s. The band's 1983 album, Pyromania was certified diamond, or 10 times platinum in the US, selling over 10 million copies. The next album, Hysteria, did even better and is their best-selling album worldwide, with more than 12 million copies sold in the US and over 25 million worldwide.

Their most recent album, simply titled Def Leppard, came out in 2015 and reached number one on the US rock and hard rock charts.

To date, the band has released 11 original studio albums, two live albums, four compilation albums, one cover album, and three extended plays.

Opening act Whitesnake has been in Prague three times, in 1997, 2011 and 2015. The only constant member in the band is vocalist David Coverdale. The first lineup of the band formed in 1978 when Coverdale left Deep Purple. The band has several periods of inactivity, but re-formed in 2002 and has been busy ever since. The group’s most recent album was The Purple Album from 2015. It contained reworked Deep Purple material.

Overall the band has 12 studio albums. Their 1987 eponymous album has been their most successful, with the hits “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love.”
