Kool & the Gang coming to Forum Karlín

Three of the original members including Kool Bell are still playing funk

Funk legends Kool & the Gang are coming to Forum Karlín on June 26, 2019. Tickets are available at TicketLive.

The current lineup features founding members of Robert “Kool” Bell, Ronald “Khalis” Bell and George “Funky” Brown, who performs as part of an 11-member group.

The band has been part of music history for over half a century, with hits like “Jungle Boogie,” “Celebration,” “Get Down On It,” “Fresh,” “Cherish” and “Ladies Night.”

They have released 23 albums, with 11 reaching into the Top 10 on the US R&B charts.

Their music was also featured in the films Pulp Fiction, Saturday Night Fever and Rocky.

Recent accolades include the three remaining founders, the Bell brothers and Brown, along with former singer James “J.T.” Taylor being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June. Over their career, they have three Grammy nominations including a win for appearing on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

The band got together in 1964 as seven friends in Jersey City, New Jersey, calling themselves the Jazziacs. An early influence on Kool was Theolonius Monk, who lived in the same apartment building and was Kool’s godfather. This brought him and his brother into contact with other jazz greats such as Miles Davis.

The Bell brothers’ father and uncle were both boxers, and Davis was interested in learning to box for a while.

The band’s first album in 1969 was completely instrumental. They didn’t find fame until their fourth album, 1973’s Wild and Peaceful, which went gold and had the hits “Jungle Boogie” and “Funky Stuff.”

They spent much of the 1970s exploring disco, but finally got back into more classic funk in 1979 with the album Ladies Night, which went platinum. They had their biggest success with the followup album Celebrate!, featuring the single “Celebration,” which has become their signature song. It is also often featured at weddings and sports events.
Bob Geldof asked them to participate in the charity single “Do They Know It's Christmas?” making the only Americans in the project.

The band continued charity outreach in the late 1980s with projects to encourage students in school. In 2001 they delved into hip-hop with the album Gangland. Their most album is Kool for the Holidays, released in 2013.
