Selena Gomez concert canceled
Singer cites health reasons for axing the European leg of her world tour
Pop star Selena Gomez has canceled the European leg of her Revival tour including the Prague show that was to have taken place Oct. 24. Refunds for tickets will be available starting Sept. 12, and people should take tickets to the place they were purchased. Online sales should be automatically refunded.
The singer, who rose to fame on TV in the shows Barney & Friends and Wizards of Waverly Place, cited health issues.
“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have Lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of Lupus, which can present their own challenges. I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone and by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues,” she said in a statement.
The European leg was to begin Oct. 10 in Finland and wrap up Nov. 16 in Portugal, before going to Dubai and then Latin America. In all, 34 dates have been canceled. In addition, two shows in China were previously canceled by authorities on Aug. 6 and 8. Nor reason was given but it is suspected that it was due to her support of the Dalai Lama.
The tour was already under way, having started May 6 in Las Vegas. It had gone through most major cities in the US and Canada, as well as parts of Asia and Oceania, but still had two dates in Canada and one in New York City left when the cancellation was announced. The last show performed was in Auckland, New Zealand.
The highly choreographed show had on average 20 songs and several costume changes, starting with the title song of her new album, “Revival” and ending with a remix of the same song. Along with her hits, the show included some unreleased material and covers such as the Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).”
Revival, released in 2015, was her second solo album. She also recorded three studio albums with her band the Scene. The has also appeared in 21 films including the recent Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and as herself in The Big Short. She also has worked as a clothing designer, released a perfume in her name, and was a UNICEF ambassador.
