Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox coming to Lucerna

The vintage jazz ensemble has a new album of re-envisioned pop hits

Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, which shot to fame with videos on YouTube, will be coming to Lucerna Velký sál on March 26.

Bradlee describes Postmodern Jukebox as a new type of entertainment that is not a band or a Broadway show. “The best way to describe it would be an alternate universe where today's pop music takes place many years ago, back in the days of vinyl records and big bands and swing dancing,” Bradlee said in a video FAQ, adding that what started as people dropping by his basement apartment to make videos has turned into an “amazing artistic community.”

At shows, the group is large and doesn't have one lead singer. “We bring over a dozen performers most of the time. We'll bring four to five singers, an MC, a tap dancer, a full band and horn section on our tours. And sometimes we have other special guests just show up unexpectedly,” he said.

The tours also have an element of surprise, as people won't know exactly who is in the show and what will be performed until it starts. “We want you guys to feel something when your favorite performer steps on stage. We also want you to leave seeing incredible talent that maybe you never saw before,” he said. The composition of the performers also changes during the tour to keep the shows fresh, so a review from early in the tour might refer to performers or songs that don't appear later in the same tour.

Bradlee himself also does not appear in all of the shows. He says he is more interested in building the community of performers than being a rock star himself, and he would rather make new arrangements and find new talent. “You cannot do that and tour 300 days out of the year,” he said. He also encourages fans to reach out to him over social media during the tours with their reactions.

There are sometimes two shows on the same day, with different group members in each city performing different songs.

It is not unusual for shows with big touring ensembles to not have the main person in every show. There are many dance companies, for example, built on one person's name but that person does not actually dance in the shows, and there are several units with the company name performing worldwide at the same time.

The group just released a new album called 33 Resolutions Per Minute, featuring 18 tracks.

Among the recent Postmodern Jukebox videos from the album is a vintage jazz remake of “Ice Ice Baby.”

Other songs on the new collection include “Teenage Dirtbag,” “I Will Survive,” “Since U Been Gone” and “Bizarre Love Triangle.” Fans of the internet meme called rickrolling may want to check out the new arrangement of “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

The UK/European leg of the tour begins Feb. 27 in Bournemouth, UK, and ends April 12 in Porto, Portugal.
