Jamiroquai joins Colours of Ostrava lineup
The biggest summer festival in the Czech Republic has announced its headliners
The lineup for this year's Colours of Ostrava festival is shaping up, with Jamiroquai joining the previously announced headliners Imagine Dragons, Norah Jones and Alt-J. The festival runs July 19–22 in Dolní Vítkovice, a former industrial area in Ostrava in northern Moravia.
Jamiroquai, led by founding member Jay Kay, has an upbeat funk style that borders on disco and acid jazz. The British future-funk band currently has the best-selling funk album of all time, Travelling Without Moving from 1996. The group will be releasing their eighth studio album, Automaton, on March 31.
The band formed in 1992 and has grown famous thanks to singles such as “When You Gonna Learn,” “Cosmic Girl,” “Space Cowboy” and “Love Foolosophy.” Their albums have sold over 35 million copies worldwide. The single “Virtual Insanity” won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, among other awards.
The lineup so far also includes the American alternative rock band Imagine Dragons, most famous for their 2012 single “Radioactive,” which earned a Grammy for Best Single. They were also named Favorite Alternative Rock Artist in 2013 and 2014 at the American Music Awards, and Newcomer of the Year in the 2013 European Festival Awards.
Imagine Dragons was at Prague's O2 Arena in January 2016, returning after playing much smaller club SaSaZu in April 2013.
Norah Jones, an American nine-time Grammy winner, singer and songwriter, will make her Czech debut at Colours of Ostrava. Jones has enjoyed great success among the public and the critics since the release of her first solo album in 2002, Come Away with Me. She has collaborated with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Foo Fighters and Outkast and, aside from her solo project, she also plays with her two collective bands The Little Willies and Puss N Boots.
British group ALT-J was in Prague for an outdoor show in June 2015. In 2012, Alt-J's debut album An Awesome Wave won the British Mercury Prize and in 2013 it won Album of the Year at the Ivor Novello Awards.
Birdy, Moderat, Laura Mvula, Benjamin Clementine, Nouvelle Vague, Afro Celt Sound System, Faada Freddy and Pierce Brothers are also confirmed acts.
This year Colours of Ostrava promises more than 350 program items in more than 20 open and covered stages. Aside from music, the festival has theater, film and workshops. It is the biggest international music festival in the Czech Republic, attracting more than 300,000 visitors each year, and one of the 10 best music festivals in Europe according to UK newspaper The Guardian.
