Gorillaz to play Prague's O2 Arena

The UK virtual band will be live Prague for the first time

British virtual band Gorillaz will make its first appearance in Prague on Nov. 14 at O2 Arena, supporting their new album Humanz. Tickets go on sale May 5 at Ticketportal. Humanz is the band's first new studio album in seven years. This is also the band's first time on the road since 2010's Escape to Plastic Beach tour.

The band will be in North America before coming to Europe, and many of those dates have already sold out.

The European leg of the tour kicks off Nov. 1 in Luxembourg and end in Greenwich, England, on Dec. 4. They played a surprise show in March in the UK.

Gorillaz was created in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, and has four animated members: Murdoc, Noodle, Russel and 2D. These video projections will be joined on stage by the Gorillaz live band, which will see Damon Albarn joined by other performers. The most recent list of live members includes Mike Smith and Jesse Hackett on keyboards, Jeff Wootton on lead guitar, Seye Adelekan on bass guitar, and Gabriel Wallace and Karl Vanden Bossche on drums and percussion. Some support musicians will appear only in video projections.

The band is hard to classify, and its sound has been described as alternative rock, Britpop, trip hop, hip hop, electronica, indie, dub, reggae and pop.

The album Humanz was released April 28. The 360 degree video for the new song “Saturnz Barz” racked up 29.5 million views since it was released on Youtube a month ago, while the audio-only video for “Let Me Out” has 10.4 million views. The band also recently launched an app.

Humanz got generally positive reviews “What Humanz lacks in memorable hooks, it makes up for in fist-clenching spirit,” Niall Doherty said in Q magazine. But some people were not fully enthusiastic. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian called Humanz a “scattershot collection of tracks, rather than a coherent album.”

The band's eponymous 2001 debut album sold over seven million copies and made them the most successful virtual band. Their second studio album, Demon Days, released in 2005, went quintuple platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US.

Their awards include a Grammy Award in 2008 for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, two MTV Video Music Awards, three MTV Europe Music Awards and the John Peel Award for Innovation at the NME Awards in 2006.
