Baskervilles Old British Bar – Prague
‘A Scandal in Bohemia’, There’s certainly no scandal with Baskervilles Old British Bar
Tucked away in a side street not far from Wenceslas square in Prague 1, Baskervilles Old British Bar is a small part of Blighty right in the middle of the city. Daniel Grice, who is one of three co-owners of Baskervilles came to Prague initially with the intention of travelling Europe. That intention swiftly disappeared after discovering what the city of Prague had to offer, as time passed by, Daniel decided Prague really was the place for him. Two years quickly passed by in Prague and during this time Daniel picked up more and more experience to do with bars ranging from working behind them serving drinks to consultancy for other bars.
Now 10 years down the line, Daniel and two fellow ex-pats (Rad & Anastasia) own Baskervilles. However it has taken time for Baskervilles to become the bar that it is today. Initially, Baskervilles was not known as Baskervilles though. When Daniel and his friends bought the bar in November of 2014 however, they originally branded the place as a cocktail bar under the name ‘Luna Lounge’. While there was some success as a cocktail bar, it didn’t feel right to the guys, as a result Baskervilles was born. But it took time to get Baskervilles looking the way it does today, building from scratch, Baskerville’s décor resembles that of Sherlock Holmes legendary apartment, 221B Baker Street. Because of this, the décor also runs along the lines of many traditional pubs back in Britain. This was a feel that Daniel really wanted to get across to visitors to the bar and is something which you can really get a sense of as soon as you walk in.
The bar is very much so associated with the ex-pat community and locals who know every street like the back of their hand. Baskervilles is known as an ex-pats bar but tourists are encouraged to come and get involved among this community too. The friendly atmosphere of the place will make you feel at home in no time. Once you find the bar, there is no looking back. That friendly North East England vibe resonates throughout the bar and Daniel calls it, “a place to get to know new people”, he isn’t wrong there.
Entertainment at Baskervilles
Baskervilles is ‘Holmes’ to various sporting and community events, all of which anyone is welcome along to get involved with. Football and Rugby are the two main attractions when it comes to sport at Baskervilles. This is not to say that you cannot watch any other sport as Daniel will gladly take requests and play something which is in high demand. The same goes for the Football and Rugby, if there is a game on you want to watch, then by all means just ask. Currently the bar brings in crowds for the 6 Nations Rugby as every game is being aired live at the bar, so grab your supporters shirt and get yourself down there, regardless of the nation you are supporting. As for the Football, English Premiership, German Bundesliga, Championship and Champions League are all aired live too. And don’t forget Euro 2016, you can sit with a drink and cheer on your national side from the comfort of Baskervilles.
While the airing live sport is always going to bring in customers, Baskervilles also offers something different when it comes to entertainment. Why not pop in and have a sing along on the karaoke to your favourite song, or how about bringing a team along to take part in a pub quiz, you could be the next eggheads in Prague. Spend an evening feeling sophisticated while drinking at one of Baskervilles many cocktail nights. These nights always prove popular and so are becoming a regular occurrence as time goes on. Stand-up comedy nights at Baskervilles are also attracting bigger and bigger crowds from the comedy world in Prague and who doesn’t love to have a good laugh? You might even catch Daniel doing a set himself, I hear his ‘wrecking ball’ tribute is well worth seeing. And who doesn’t love a good PC gaming tournament, Baskervilles provides a great night again with regular FIFA Football tournaments, you can try out your skills against Daniel and many others who attend evenings like this. Not only are events like this a great way to spend your evenings, but it is also a way to get to know more people and make new friends. Don’t forget the beer garden during the summer months where you can sit and socialise with a drink and some fine BBQ. Beer and meat, could you really ask for more?
On top of all of this, Baskervilles also plays host to the Newcastle United supporters club, they don’t just talk football however and organise get-togethers at Baskervilles and is a good community to know if you want to expand your friendship group. Partisan Prague – a football team in the city – are made up of ex-pats who are sponsored by Baskervilles too, helping further the Baskervilles community. The bar also has a good relationship with Dutch ex-pats and a lot of Dutch events are organised and hosted at Baskervilles. The bar also does a lot for charity and recently held host to an event to raise funds and collect supplies for the refugee crisis. All of these events can be found out on Baskervilles Facebook page which you can find a link to at the bottom of this article.
With great owners and a great atmosphere, Baskervilles is a must in the city. So pop in and have a pint and enjoy one of their many events – why not get along to them all – you won’t be disappointed.
