Palác Akropolis has a double anniversary
The popular club will have special events for its 20th and 90th year
Palác Akropolis is celebrating 20 years of operation as an independent arts venue and 90 years since it originally opened. The new season that just started will have a project called 20/90 with some 20 special events in different genres.
“From musical performances, viewers can see the anniversary concert of the Czech urban folk duo Kieslowski, the French New Wave group Nouvelle Vague and a Christmas party with Tři sestry. Progressive theater will be represented by an original Iranian play White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, which will be available for viewing on several occasions over two months, but each time it will be different,” spokeswoman Eliška Černá said.
The aim of the festival is to highlight the activities of the club, which during the last two decades has offered several thousand concerts and theater performances.
“Viewers will be able to see a variety of genres on the program from September 2016 until June of next year. There will be things for fans of alternative and nonverbal theater, as well as lovers of new media and classic rock. In September, viewers outside the project launch 20/90 can enjoy the festival of young European bands Liveurope or see a reprise of the controversial staging of Vladimir Macbetin,” Černá said
Although Akropolis has been on the border of the Vinohrady and Žižkov districts already for 90 years, its modern history started shortly after the Velvet Revolution. “Since 1996 we have managed to offer important performances from around the world. Our projects with Czech artists in the world have been received positively, and many of them have received awards,” club manager Lubomír Schmidtmajer said. Before 1989, Akropolis had been a film theater.
