HIV cases rising

People are no longer concerned about the virus, which helps it to spread

The number of people infected with HIV has been growing for 15 years, and men are six times more likely to have the virus than women.

Last year, 286 people were newly infected with HIV, which is 20 more than during the previous year The growth trend has been observed since 2002.

In the Czech Republic, 109 people were infected with HIV during the first five months of 2017. This year, the month with the most new infections was March with 29. In May, the last month for which data is available, HIV newly infected 18 people. This included 17 men and one woman. Seven were in Prague. During the past five years, the number of people infected with HIV has increased by 1,000.

Since 1985, when the infection began to be tracked, some 3,015 have been infected, according to the National Reference Laboratory for HIV/AIDS of the State Health Institute (SZÚ). HIV has infected 2,583 men and 432 women. In 561 people, the virus caused the disease AIDS disease, which has killed 268 people.

According to experts, the Czech Republic is among countries with a low incidence of infection both compared to the rest of the world and to Europe.

Non-profit organizations and doctors warn that the fear of sickness has faded away and people are no longer taking protective steps. This is leading to its slow increase.

Thanks to modern treatment, patients can live longer than before, but doctors emphasize that modern therapy still has many side effects and is unpleasant. There is no cure.

A survey last year by CVVM showed 82 percent of people were no longer concerned about HIV infection. Only 15 percent were concerned.
