PilsnerFest celebrates beer in Plzeň

The iconic Czech brewery has its 175th anniversary

The first batch of Pilsner Urquell was brewed in the first week of October 1842. This year, it is the 175th anniversary, and brewer Plzeňský prazdroj is throwing a bigger than normal celebration, called PilsnerFest, on Oct. 7 at the brewery and at náměstí Republiky, the nearby streets and at Štruncovy sady in Plzeň, West Bohemia.

There will be lots of food and of course beer. To go along with it there is a large program of events starting at 11:30 am and going to after midnight.

PilsnerFest has eight places with entertainment. The stage at the brewery will be headlined by Monkey Business, Walk Choc Ice and Sto Zvířat. WAW and Viktor Dyk will play earlier in the day.

The náměstí Republiky stage will have Support Lesbiens, Alice and Dan Bárta, and Jelen, among other acts. Another stage will have local bands, while the rest will have various acts including a Doors revival band and swing music.

The events at the brewery include tours, where visitors can try unfiltered beer and see how beer is brewed. Masters will teach people how to tap a perfect beer, reaching the right level and with the proper amount of foam. You can also take a crack at beer barrel making.

Pilsner Urquell is the largest brewer in the Czech Republic. They were also the first to produce a Pilsner blond lager style beer, a type that now accounts for more than two-thirds of the beer produced worldwide. The names Plzeňský Prazdroj and Pilsner Urquell roughly mean “the original source of Pilsner.” In 2016, the company was sold to Asahi Group Holdings of Japan.

The brewer makes approximately 10 million hectoliters of beer annually.
