Hot Czech Winter Alcohol

Stay warm in cold Czech winter days ... and nights

Winter in Prague is always a magical time because of the markets, Christmas lights and of course, the wide selection of hot alcoholic beverages. Whether you need help warming up while wandering the city or watching TV at home under a pile of blankets; you can’t go wrong with these cheek-reddening cocktails:

Beer grog
: Czechs boast the best beer in the world and use beer in spas, shampoo, and bread. More effective than a ‘beer coat’, beer grog typically includes the following ingredients: dark beer, dark cane rum, maple syrup, barley and vanilla sugar. Not every beer lover is a fan of this concoction but it’s a great item to add to your bucket list.

Hot Becherovka Cocktails
: Becherovka is a popular drink that was created in 1907 that was meant to be used as a medicine as well as a social drink. It was said that two 20 ml shots, one in the morning and one in the evening, would help your body stay strong, youthful and healthy. Over the many years, many Bechorovka cocktails, both hot and cold have been invented:

- Hot Becherovka: The simplest cocktail with a similar concept to mulled wine. For this drink, you simply use a large shot (40 ml) of Becherovka, add 150 ml of hot water, one slice of lemon and a spoon of honey.

- Avalanche (Lavina in Czech): For wine lovers, this cocktail requires a large shot of Becherovka mixed with 100 ml of red wine, and heated up together with 20 ml of honey and 10 ml of fresh lime juice. Once it’s warmed up, you can add a cinnamon stick for ambiance.

- BE Punch: With a sweet and sour citrusy flavor and plenty of vitamin C: mix a large shot of Becherovka, 10 ml of fresh lemon juice, 10 ml of fresh orange juice, 100 ml of water and 20 ml of sugary syrup or grenadine. Once these ingredients are heated up you can decorate the drink with a slice of lemon, orange, and lime.

- Hot Butter Becherovka: Tasting just like Christmas: mix an extra-large shot of Becherovka (50 ml!) with 100 ml of thick apple juice, 20 ml of fresh lemon juice and 20 ml of honey water (half water, half honey). Pour the liquid into a cup and one cinnamon stick, a slice of unsalted butter, 4 cloves and 1 star of anise (also known as badian). You can add a slice of apple as decoration.

- Tea date: Because the only way to make tea better is by adding Becherovka: gently mix 45 ml of Becherovka, 60 ml of rosehip tea, 20 ml of honey water and 15 ml of fresh lime juice. After gently mixing, shake these ingredients (in a teapot) and heat up to 75°C.

Grog: You either love it or you hate it, grog can be found in most Czech restaurants and cafes. It is a mixture of rum, hot water, sugar and a slice of lemon.

Hot Absinthe: Although this is not typically Czech, you can also make hot cocktails out of absinthe. Probably the only place that offers these cocktails is that has several bars in Prague, including right outside of Old Town Square. The cocktails include but are not limited to:

- Absinth coffee: coffee, Absinth Staroplzenecky, and Absinth whipped cream
- Absinth Blaze: Absinth 35, Stark rum, rosemary syrup, sugar syrup and lime Codial
- Absinth Pink Punch: Absinth 35, spiced berry cordial, water, lime juice
- Absinth After 8’s: Absinth Staroplzenecky, milk, mint syrup and chocolate

Mulled wine: This most typical Czech winter drink can be ordered almost anywhere, but not all ‘svařak’ is made equal. You can buy special spice packages as well as red wine specifically made for your mulled wine. The recipe involved heating the wine up in a pot (but not boiling it!), adding fresh orange or lemon juice, sugar, lemon slices and cloves. There are many varieties of the recipe that include other spices, hints of caramel and can also be made out of white wine.
