Prague College Graphic design Student Jan Rosicky, wins prestigious student design award in the UK

“Student Design Awards” given by the UK's Royal Society of Arts

Jan Rosicky, a student in the college’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design programme, has won one of this year’s prestigious “Student Design Awards” given by the UK's Royal Society of Arts.

Jan Rosicky is the first Czech to have won the award in its 92-year history. Former winners include Jonathan Ive, Chief Design Officer at Apple, and Richard Clarke, Global Design Vice-President of Nike.

The “Student Design Awards” is a global competition that aims to find the world’s best young designers, and only twelve awards are made each year out of 900 entries. 24 year old Rosicky received a note of congratulations from the RSA just last week informing him of the jury's decision and the 1,500 GBP (53,000 CZK) prize that was included in the award and made by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS).

Along with his teacher, noted Czech designer Petr Knobloch, Jan will now attend the ceremony at the Royal Society of Arts in London on 20 June.

For the brief, Jan designed and produced a complete concept in the ‘Mind your Money’ category which he has called ‘M’. 'M’ is a wearable gadget and an app that autonomously tracks all expenses and segments them into spending categories without the user having to input the data, which is a major hurdle for young people using existing budget management apps. ‘M’ offers an alternative to contactless cards and aims to make abstract data easier to understand and use effectively.

Jan will meet the board of RBS during the summer to present his concept further. He has also won praise from the innovation team of Česká spořitelna.

Talking about Jan’s award, Douglas Hajek, founder and director of Prague College said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Jan has received this incredible award, not only for him but also for our Graphic Design team in the College who have, yet again, produced a student that is capable of competing at such a high level. Such is the sophistication of ‘M’ that a number of banking institutions in both the UK and the Czech Republic, as well as developers in the US, have already expressed an interest in bringing the concept to market.
