Plácido Domingo to conduct Don Giovanni for its 230th anniversary

The two sold-out special performances will mark the 230th anniversary of the premiere in Prague

Practically the first thing any visitor learns about Prague is that the world premiere of Mozart's Don Giovanni took place here, with Mozart conducting on Oct. 29, 1787.

The Estates Theatre in Prague on Oct. 27 and 29, 2017, will be present a new production of Don Giovanni with opera star Plácido Domingo conducting. The dates are the 230th anniversary of the premiere, at the very same venue. The Estates Theatre in fact is the only theater left standing in the world where Mozart conducted one of his operas.

“If there is such a thing as a perfect opera, Don Giovanni is certainly a top candidate,” Domingo said in a press release. “It has everything: high drama, high comedy, sex, jealousy, farce – one of the best libretti and some of the greatest music ever written. It is pure genius from start to finish.”

Domingo performed the role of Don Ottavio for the first time 54 years ago in a Tel Aviv Opera production featuring his wife, Martha, as Donna Elvira.

The cast includes winners from Domingo's Operalia competition as well as eminent Czech singers.

Domingo is also the production’s artistic director and chose the cast: Operalia winners Simone Alberghini (Don Giovanni), Irina Lungu (Donna Anna) and Julia Novikova (Zerlina) as well as Czech opera singers Kateřina Kněžíková (Donna Elvira) and Jan Štáva (Commendatore).

The production is based on the 1969 National Theatre Opera staging with a famous set by designer Josef Svoboda and stage direction by Václav Kašlík. This production will use costumes by Oscar-winner Theodor Pištěk, who worked on Miloš Forman's 1984 film Amadeus.

Domingo is also going to shoot a documentary about Mozart’s close relationship to Prague and its audience. Mozart once is allege to have said the only Praguers understood him.

Mozart was also in Prague on other occasions. He conducted La Clemenza di Tito Sept. 6, 1791, as well as his Prague Symphony on Jan. 19, 1787.
