Tenor Andreas Schager to sing at Forum Karlín

The evening includes part of Wagner's Die Walküre plus Beethoven and Berg

The special Beethoven-Berg-Wagner concert should be a treat for opera lovers. It takes place Nov. 16 at 7 pm at Forum Karlín in Prague.

The concert includes all of Act 1 of Richard Wagner's opera Die Walküre, starring Austrian tenor Andreas Schager, American soprano Meagan

Miller and Slovak bass Peter Mikuláš. The State Opera Orchestra will be conducted by Andreas Sebastian Weiser. The program also includes Beethoven's Leonore Overture 1 and Berg's Violin Concerto, which will be performed by Austrian violinist Lidia Baich.

Andreas Schager is considered by some to be the best contemporary Heldentenor, a tenor suitable for heroic roles. “We are happy to have continuously succeeded in welcoming artists of global renown. Such towering figures as Plácido Domingo, José Cura, and Yusif Eyvazov not only have enthusiastically accepted our invitations, they have even returned to Prague, wishing to continue to work with us,” Silvia Hroncová, the director of the National Theatre Opera and the State Opera, said in a press release.

Schager has appeared as a guest at La Scala in Milan, as well as at the Bayreuther Festspiele, where he has been invited to portray Parsifal.

He jumped to the chance to perform in Prague. “I really look forward to visiting Prague, to working with Andreas Sebastian Weiser and the State Opera Orchestra. The State Opera has a long and illustrious tradition, and I feel greatly honored to have been afforded the opportunity to become a little part of its history. And naturally, I am all the more delighted to be able to perform in Prague along with my wife Lidia, who will play Alban Berg's Violin Concerto in the first half of the evening,” he said.

Lidia Baich has performed throughout Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

Berg's Violin Concerto was composed “to the memory of an angel,” the late 18-year-old daughter of Alma Mahler and her second husband, architect Walter Gropius.

“The concerto's effect is truly exceptional. The listener receives something to take away from the auditorium, something he or she will reflect upon long after having heard the piece,” Baich said.

The Beethoven-Berg-Wagner concert is the second part of a cycle of State Opera performances at Forum Karlín. The first, Wagner-Korngold-Zemlinsky, was in March 2017.

Forum Karlín will be used again March 1, 2018, for a concert version of Emil von Reznicek's opera Donna Diana.

Forum Karlín is being used by the State Opera as one of its substitute venues during the ongoing renovation of the opera house

The State Opera should reopen in 2019, likely with a new staging of a Wagner opera.

The building closed in July 2016, and renovations work began in March 2017. The budget for the project is Kč 858 million.

Much of the work is being done in the behind-the-scenes areas. The state of the stage technology has been making it difficult to put on productions in the 21st century.
