Cirque du Soleil returning to Prague

The contemporary circus troupe will bring Toruk, a show inspired by Avatar

Cirque du Soleil is returning to Prague with the show Toruk – The First Flight. The Canadian acrobatic and circus troupe will be at O2 Arena from May 31 to June 2, 2019, for five shows. Tickets go on sale to Cirque Club members June 11, to Live Nation Club members June 13 and to the general public June 15.

Toruk – The First Flight is inspired by the James Cameron film Avatar, and it premiered in December 2015 in Montreal. The show depicts events thousands of years before what happened in the famous 2009 sci-fi film.

The title refers to a feared predator that is similar to a pterodactyl. “According to an ancient prophecy, one day, there will be a Toruk Makto; a rider of this fire-colored creature of nightmares,” the show description states. The Toruk is a giant puppet manipulated from above.

The elaborate set features colorful elements such as Tree of Souls and the Great Loom, where acrobatics take place. There are also a lot of video screens to complete the illusion of an alien world.

There are several key character or tribes in the show, and each does a specific king of acrobatics, including tumbling, aerial silks, hand balancing and using Chinese poles.

The main characters have to visit several tribes to collect some amulets so the Toruk can be summoned. The actors speak in the constructed language the natives used in the film, but there is narration to explain what is going on. There is also singing by vocalist Priscilia Le Foll.

Viewers can download a phone app that can be used during the production to, for example, participate in lighting effects.

The show has been praised for its visual style and elaborate dance and fight choreography. Various critics have pointed out that the show is a bit different than most other Cirque du Soleil offerings, as it is more about creating a new visual world on stage than about wall-to-wall acrobatic stunts.

Cirque du Soleil was recently in Prague with a different show, Varekai, Tales of the Forest, which was first staged in 2002.

Their oldest active show is Mystère, which dates to 1993. Toruk is by no means the most recent one. Five shows have premiered since that one including Crystal, from October 2017.

Cirque du Soleil is the largest theatrical producer in the world, and is based in Montreal, Canada. It was founded in 1984 by two former street performers, Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix. The group was one of the pioneers of contemporary circus, or nouveau cirque, which stresses stories and characters, and does not use animals.

The troupe also performs several other shows at the same time. Beatles Love, Zarkana and Michael Jackson One are currently among many performances resident in Las Vegas. Joyá has been in Mexico City since 2014, and Paramour has been in a theater in New York since April 2016. There are also several active touring shows for tents and arenas.
