Judah Friedlander coming to kino Světozor

The actor from 30 Rock has one CEE date on his European stand-up tour

American comedian Judah Friedlander is coming live in person to kino Světozor on Sept 3 for one show of stand-up comedy.

He is on an ambitious 15 date tour with additional stops in England, Scotland, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Spain and Sweden.

Prague is the only show in Central and Eastern Europe.

Friedlander is best-known for playing Frank Rossitano on the NBC television series 30 Rock, which ran from 2006 to ’13. The series was a fictional backstage look at creating a weekly comedy show.

Friedlander’s character was a sarcastic writer on the fictional show. His mesh hat bore a different phrase in every episode.

He keeps the same unkempt look, with long hair, oversize glasses and slogan-emblazoned T-shirts for his stand-up appearances and most of his roles. “World Champion” is a common slogan he wears, and his tour is sometimes referred to as his World Champion tour.

His recent Netflix special, titled America is the Greatest Country in the United States, was critically acclaimed as “raw, edgy and hilarious.”

Friedlander calls the special a satire of American exceptionalism as well as US domestic and foreign policy. “In it I address racism, sexism, fascism, climate change, health care, LGBTQ rights, drones, mass incarceration, imperialism and many other human rights issues,” he said.

People who have seen the streaming special, filmed in black-and-white at the Comedy Cellar in New York, should not be afraid that they will waste their time seeing him live.

“When on tour, I will be doing new and different material that is not in my stand-up special,” he said.

Before 30 Rock, Friedlander played a supporting role in the film American Splendor, which starred Paul Giamatti as comic book artist Harvey Pekar.

Friedlander got positive reviews and a nomination for best supporting actor at the 2004 Independent Spirit Awards for his performance.

He began his career drawing political cartoons and making animated films. He began doing stand-up comedy in 1989 while attending New York University. He says he prefers stand-up to acting and other forms of comedy.

Local comic Toby Arsalan will open the show, which is being staged by Velvet Comedy.
