HBO’s The Sleepers Takes You Back to Prague 1989

If you’re familiar with award-winning HBO’s Chernobyl, then you will love HBO’s new mini-series The Sleepers.

The spy drama is set in 1989, on the cusp of the Velvet Revolution that ended communist rule in former Czechoslovakia. Following the lives of Marie (Tatiana Pauhofová) and Victor (Martin Myšička) who return back to Prague after years of political exile. After a car accident, Marie wakes up from a coma with no trace of Victor. She investigates Victors disappearance, suspicious of political motivations.

Directed by Czech directors Ivan Zachariáš and Ondřej Gabrie almost 30 years after the Velvet Revolution, The Sleepers is a must-see for those interested in the history of Prague and the importance of democracy for Czechs. The show authentically captures the air of the time, from the clothes to the apartment decor.

The mini-series lets you travel through time to a familiar but very different Prague. You will probably recognize a lot of the streets, a lot of the show was shot in surrounding areas of Karlovo  Karlovo náměstí, Národní třída, Vyšehrad,  Strossmayerovo náměstí and the Vltava River.
