The Conquest of the North Pole

Dobytí severního pólu by Cimrman/Smoljak/Svěrák

The story of Jára Cimrman, the unknown, misunderstood and fictitious Czech artist, scientist, musician, teacher and genius, has been entertaining Czech audiences for 50 years.

Our theater brings you the second of one of his many plays in English. This beloved comedy, which many Czechs will quote by heart, tells a story of a 1908 Czech expedition to conquer the North Pole. As the intrepid band of explorers bravely head toward their goal, they must battle against the depression of the polar night, sub zero temperatures and a lack of food.

Come and explore with us this piece of Czech history that never existed. See for yourselves what the legend of the Jára Cimrman, who won the poll for the GREATEST CZECH in 2005, is all about.

Translating Cimrman's scripts from the Czech is not an easy task as they are closely linked to Czech history, culture and full of word play. Czech humor, though it may not be evident at first, is very close to the English one.

The tranlators – Emilia Machalová and Brian Stewart – have worked in cooperation with Hana Jelínková-Svěráková (daughter of Zdeněk Svěrák) to produce an English version as close to the Czech original as possible.

The production has been supported by Zdeněk Svěrák, one of the actual authors of Jára Cimrman.

Two years ago, the Žižkov Theatre of Jára Cimrman hosted the first one of Cimrman's plays in English: ZÁSKOK - THE STAND IN

The overwhelming reception of the play that has been by now seen by thousands, both Czechs and foreigners, and has prompted us to continue in our work.
