Dave Johns will be live in Prague

The British comedian will be at a downtown movie theater for one show only

Comedian Dave Johns is coming to Prague for a live comedy show Jan. 31 at kino Světozor. It is an actual live appearance on stage by Dave Johns in person in Prague, and not a streamed video of a live show taking place somewhere else.

The live show is at a movie theater because Dave Johns will also soon be on Czech screens in the Cannes festival Palme d’Or winner I, Daniel Blake. The same people bringing the film to Prague are behind the personal stand up appearance. Johns has won or been nominated for multiple awards for his performance in the film, and singled out for praise in reviews.

His comedy has also earned top reviews. “He has an uncontrived manner and sense of fun on stage that makes what he does seem effortless. … The gags came thick and fast,” The Observer said.

Dave Johns is known in the UK for his appearances on TV panel shows and comedy shows including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Rob Brydon's Annually Retentive, 28 Acts in 28 Minutes and Harry Hill. In the latter show he appeared as God.

His — meaning Dave Johns, not God — Prague appearance is the first one listed on his website for 2017, and the only announced so far until March, when begins to get busy with a tour, so this show is a bit of a one-off. He has been working in comedy clubs and at festivals for about three decades.

According to the fun facts on his website, he has performed inside the Arctic circle, in Cambodia and in the wardroom on board a nuclear submarine in Guam, where all the officers wore dresses. He also claims humor depend a lot on proper delivery. Mick Jagger once told one of his jokes to tens of thousands fans in Glasgow. The joke bombed, and the band went quickly into “Start Me Up.”

He has also dabbled in live theater, appearing in a production of The Odd Couple as well as in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, 12 Angry Men and Measure for Measure. As a writer he co-wrote a stage adaptation of the Stephen King story Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which has played across he UK and also in Japan with a Japanese cast. His other talents include playing the ukulele, at least according to his website, which has several less credible claims to fame as well.

Support for the Prague show comes from Dutch comic Jeffrey Mons, UK comic Daniel Grice and the MC is Luke Ryan of Ireland.
