Festival Spectaculare starting fourth edition

The multi-genre festival will bring electronic and ambient music and more

The name Festival Spectaculare sets up high expectations. Now in its fourth edition, the festival runs Jan. 19 for Feb. 18, and goes beyond just music to find links to physical theater, dance, video, videomapping and photography. Many of the events take place in Palác Akropolis, with others in venues ranging from clubs like Radlická, Meet Factory, Cross Club, Roxy and Neone to the theaters like Alfred ve dvore and Ponec to city spaces like Planetárium Praha in Stromovka and Kostel u Salvatora. There are also films at Bio Oko and Světozor.

The festival starts with an art exhibition at Chemistry Gallery, which runs Jan. 19 to Feb. 2. the first musical event is Kompakt night with German duo Saschienne live plus DJs at Radlická on Jan. 20.

German composer, director and music producer Sven Helbig will be at Kostel u Salvatora on Jan. 23 with a 10-member choir. He has worked with Rammstein, Pet Shop Boys and Snoop Dogg, among others.

Another early highlight is the Edition Label Showcase with the UK folk, jazz and rock group Dinosaur, which recently released its debut album, and experimental Finnish band Oddarrang, influenced by jazz, classical, world music and postmodern rock. The will be at Palác Akropolis on Jan. 25. The same venue has Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen and Austrian electronic musician Fennesz on Jan. 26 and Ki Records Label night on Feb. 1.

Norwegian ambient musician Biosphere in collaboration with visual artists Initi will present an audiovisual show at Planetárium Praha for three shows Feb. 2, but tickets for all three presentations are already hard to come by.

Meet Factory on Feb. 3 will have a big night headlined by UK electronic artist Nathan Fake, along with German electronic act The Micronaut and DJs.

Ponec, Cross Club and Neone will get in on the action from Feb. 6 to 12. Bvdub, an electronic producer who left his native US to start over in China, is at Ponec on Feb. 6. He shares the bill with German ambient musician Mathias Grassow. Cross Club has UK and other DJs one Feb. 9, and Neone has a Lobster Theremin Label Showcase on Feb. 10. Ponec is back Feb. 11 and 12 with Spitfire Company and Berg Orchestra presenting a collaboration called Constellations I (Before I Say Yes).

Alfred ve dvore gets involved Feb. 13 with Wariot Ideal presenting GundR, an epic story about endurance.

Skipping over films and workshops, which are still worth checking out, the festival ends Feb. 25 at Roxy with HVOB, which stands for Her Voice Over Boys. The duo is about to release its third album, which is said to have a darker sound, and go on tour. Previously they have appeared at festivals such as Burning Man. In 2014 they were named one of the top live acts by readers of DeBug magazine.
