Prague to launch new ways to pay for public transit

Coupons stored on bank cards and mobile phones coming next year

Prague wants to launch a new system of payment for public transit in June 2018. People will be able to travel using a bank card or smartphone app. City company Operátor ICT has announced a tender for a company that will create the system.

The new options will be in addition to SMS tickets, paper tickets and the cards Lítačka or Opencard.

“This project will cover up to 2.6 million people and everyone will be able to choose whether to buy the coupon on a transit card, a credit card or perhaps a mobile application,” Prague Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) told daily Hospodářské noviny.

The new payment system will introduce products similar to ones that are already operating in Brno, Ostrava and Plzeň.

It will be possible to pay for a coupon with a mobile application without the passenger having to go anywhere to pick up the card or have the card validated.

Passengers can show their contactless payment card or phone to a ticket inspector who will be able to determine if the fare has been paid.

The project should be available next June.

Companies interested in providing the service can now register for the tender to provide an e-shop for coupons and tickets, and other related services.

The city has been trying to make public transportation more attractive by increasing the payment options. The price of an annual coupon was lowered as well, making it the equivalent of Kč 10 a day.

Recently also the city launched a new policy where people caught without tickets can pay a reduced fine if they agree to get an annual pass.

In the long term, the number of tram tracks is being increased and a fourth metro line is being built.

The city is also starting a pilot program to introduce WiFi into metro stations, and the first ones should be at the end of September. WiFi is also on some newer model trams and a private initiative has launched WiFi at some tram stops.
