Prague’s forests getting renovated

Benches and playgrounds are being fixed after years of neglect

Prague has fixed 500 benches and is repairing playgrounds is the city’s wooded parks including Hostivařský lesopark, Prokopské údolí, Divoká Šárka, Kunratický les and Chuchelský háj.

The city has invested less than Kč 1 million in the renovation of the benches. The most damaged were the first to be fixed.

Benches have long been exposed to vandalism and the effects of nature, and have deteriorated. City Hall has decided to repair all of them. “The wooden parts of the existing benches with iron and concrete supports have passed through their lifespan,” Dan Frantík, head of the municipal department of care for the greenery, told daily Pražský deník.

The old wooden parts backrests and seats were replaced with oak planks, which should last longer and require less maintenance.

Frantík said the repairs would continue next year and gradually reach all of the benches.

New seating will be installed at highly used sites. Wooden gazebos will also be added in some places.

The gazebos will be made from local wood from Prague forests such as locust, oak, and spruce.

Playgrounds are also slated for more repairs.

The plan for forests calls for elements that were installed before 2010 to be replaced in the next wave of repairs.

A new playground tower was built in Krčský les in September, and others will follow. Divoká Šárka will get new playground elements in November and December.

Further steps will be evaluated during the winter months, though new swings are likely to be on the agenda next year.

The city in the past announced new playgrounds and fitness areas for smaller parks in urban areas and also Prague 6 announced a pilot program for solar-powered toilets at playgrounds.

Plans to make upgrades to Letenské sady, Obora Hvězda, Stromovka Park, Vítkov Hill and the area around the Petřín Lookout Tower were announced at the end of October.
