Traffic to be restricted for New Year’s celebrations

Increased security will be in place for both New Year's Eve and the New Year's Day

The New Year's Eve celebrations and the New Year's Day fireworks in Prague will be protected by the police, the rescue and the firefighters. Traffic restrictions will also be in place on some roads in the city center.

“Using all available technology and human potential, we are focused on ensuring that residents of Prague and its visitors experience this period safely. All units of the Integrated Rescue System of the City of Prague will participate and cooperate. The leadership of both the city and the state police have put together an extraordinary number of specially trained police officers, guards, and commanders. We checked their readiness and organization before the Christmas holidays,” City Councilor Libor Hadrava said in a press release.

“However, I would like to appeal to citizens at the same time to celebrate the New Year in a reasonable manner. The biggest problems are at this time are the ones people regularlycreate. These include inappropriate or strictly risky acts not only during celebrations in the center, especially in Old Town and Wenceslas Squares, but in the whole of the capital,” he added.

New Year’s Eve

On New Year’s Eve, the security program for Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square begins at 5 pm and ends after midnight. Metro service will be extended to 2 am on Jan 1 at an interval of 10 minutes.

Access roads will be closed for automobile traffic. Pařížská and Jáchymova streets will be restricted from 8 pm to 3 am.

It won’t be possible to park on Wenceslas Square. Parking will be forbidden from noon on Dec. 31 to 10 am Jan. 1. Driving will be forbidden on Wilsonova Street from noon on Dec. 31 to 10 am Jan. 1, and on Jindřišská, Vodičkova, Štěpánská and Ve Smečkách from 4 pm on Dec. 31 to 8 am on Jan. 1.

Due to recent experience when celebrations centered around midnight at Charles Bridge and its surroundings, Křižovnická and Smetanovo nábřeží in the section from Platnéřská to Karoliny Světlé will be closed to traffic from 11:30 pm to 1:30 am. In Malá Strana, Josefská and Mostecká streets will be closed from 9 pm to 2 am.

Ambulances and other emergency vehicles will be at both squares, and the Golem emergency vehicle will be at Wenceslas Square. Police boats will be on the Vltava river.

The street closures help to prevent accidents with pedestrians and also provide unblocked routes for ambulances. It is important for people to stay out of the empty lanes when instructed by police.

New Year’s Day

The New Year's Day fireworks will be at 6 pm. It will take a total of 660 seconds. There will be a significant reduction in the number of acoustic effects and large spherical bombs, which create intense noise and disturb pets and wildlife.
