Qatar Airways launching Dreamliner service to Prague

Václav Havel Airport Prague will have its first regularly scheduled Boeing 787

A Boeing 787 Dreamliner will start regular service from Václav Havel Airport Prague. Qatar Airways confirmed that from Oct. 28, 2018, the Dreamliner will be deployed on the route from Prague to Doha to increase the overall capacity by about 46 percent. The daily afternoon flight to Doha, the capital of Qatar, will use a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with a capacity of 254 passengers.

The morning flight from Prague will continue with an Airbus A320 with capacity for 132 passengers. Both aircraft will offer passengers an economy and business class.

Thanks to increased capacity, it is expected that the existing daily lines together will carry about 75,000 passengers in both directions for one year.

“We have been monitoring the potential for using a larger aircraft on Qatar Airways route to Doha for a long time. We are therefore pleased that the airline leadership has decided to take the step with one of their daily routes using one of the most advanced aircraft in the world, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner,” Václav Řehoř, chairman of the board of directors of Prague Airport, said in a press release.

“Qatar Airways will become the first operator of this type of aircraft on regular daily routes from Prague. The larger aircraft will also increase the capacity on the route by almost half, which means that even more Czech passengers will be able to use the convenient air link not only in the Middle East but also further to the destinations in Asia and Australia,” he added.

Qatar Airways began a direct link between Prague and Doha on Aug. 21, 2017. The increase to two daily flights occurred after almost four months of operation in December of last year.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner service leave Prague at 4:10 pm and arrives in Doha just after midnight at 12:10 am. The return Boeing 787 service leaves Doha at 8 am and arrives in Prague at 12:25 pm.

The Airbus A320 service leaves Prague at 8:25 am and arrives in Doha at 4:25 pm. The return flight leaves Doha at 2:30 pm and arrives in Prague at 4:55 pm.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner first came into service in 2011. It is a long-haul, mid-size wide-body, twin-engine jet airliner made by Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

It is the first airliner with an airframe constructed primarily of composite materials. The plane was designed to be 20 percent more fuel-efficient than the Boeing 767.

While it is larger than the A320, the Dreamliner has nowhere near the capacity of the Airbus A380, which can carry up to 850 people in an economy-only configuration. The 787-8 Dreamliner can seat a maximum of 359 in a single class configuration.

The airport handled a total of 7,463,975 passengers in the first half of 2018, a 10 percent increase over the same period last year, and looks set to break last year's annual record of clearing 15,415,001 passengers. That was an increase of 17.9 percent compared to 2016.

The airport recently opened new check-in facilities that will help increase the capacity of Terminal 2, which handles flights within the Schengen Zone. More infrastructure changes are planned in the long term, including another runway.

Václav Havel Airport Prague opened April 5, 1937, as Prague Ruzyně Airport. Right after former president Václav Havel's death on Dec. 18, 2011, an online petition asked the government to rename it to Václav Havel International Airport. This name change took place Oct. 5, 2012, on what would have been Havel's 76th birthday.
