Plans advance for train stops in Prague 8

A study shows that two new stops are feasible while a third is unrealistic

The construction of new train stops in Prague 8 has taken another step forward. A study by the city shows that two of the three locations, in Libeň and Karlín, could be built relatively quickly.

Currently there are passenger train tracks in use in Prague 8, but no local train stations.

The city is trying to encourage more use of trains for commuters, but some parts of the city are not sufficiently served by stops.

The easiest new station to create is near the U Kříže tram stop in Libeň.

The new U Kříže train station would cost a maximum of Kč 92 million and does not require a change to the municipal zoning plan or the purchase of land.

Two options have proposed for the stop, on opposite sides of the bridge across Zenklova Street.

The study favors the option on the west side of the bridge, with approaches from the tram stop on Zenklova Street and at the intersection of Kandertova and Primátorská streets.

The existing U Kříže tram stop will be moved under the railway bridge to make the shortest transfer to public transport.

Creating a second stop in Karlín at the entry to the Žižkov tunnel is more complicated. The station would have an island and an elevator for barrier-free access.

The cost for this station is estimated at Kč 500 million, which includes renovating the retaining wall at the base of Vítkov Hill.

A third new stop at Balabenka was found to be unrealistic.

The study was prepared by the company Pro CEDOP and UNIT architects, both of which are cooperating with the city on developing the railway in the city.

These are not the only planned railway stations. The city in 2017 announced plans for 20 new train stops by the year 2030. Stops mentioned at that time included Eden, Zahradní Město, Rajská zahrada, Bubny, Výstaviště, Liboc, Jahodnice, Kbely, Hostivice and Spořilov.

In the long term, the city also wants to see a rail connection to Václav Havel Airport Prague that will continue to Kladno.
